— 누구보다 깊이 사유하여 압축된 말로 한방에 던진다.


고대 철학의 대부분은 아테네에서 나왔기 때문에 흔히 아테네는 지혜의 상징이고 스파르타는 전쟁이나 싸움만을 중시하는 나라로 알고 있다.

그러나 『플루타르코스 영웅전』에서 리쿠르고스 편을 보면 스파르타 정신이란 단순히 육체적 강건함이나 전투력을 의미하는 것이 아니라 절제와 인내력을 통해 나오는 지혜의 힘에서 비롯되는 것임을 알 수 있다.

스파르타의 법과 제도를 수립하고 그것을 500년간 이어져 헬라스 최고의 강국으로 만들어준 리쿠르고스는 스파르타인들의 정신을 개조시키기 위해서 단체생활을 통해 절제된 식습관을 생활화시키고 공동생활을 통해 어릴적부터 경험많은 어른들의 지혜와 토론들을 직접 보고 듣게 하였다.

어릴적부터 일상속 모든 면에서 자제력과 통제력을 길러주는 훈련들을 생활하였으며 아이들간에 다툼이 생기면 그것을 저마다 어떤 성격을 지녔는지 알아내는 기회로 삼았다.

아이들끼리는 오랫동안 생각해야 하는 질문들을 서로 나누며 깊이 생각하는 습관을 길러내었고, 훌륭한 것이 무엇인가에 대한 깊은 성찰을 어릴때부터 해오면서 사람들을 탐구하듯이 관찰하는 습관을 들였다.

식습관을 비롯한 모든 생활에서의 검약과 절제의 습관은 언어습관에서도 이어지는데 질문을 받으면 곧장 간결하게 대답해야 했고, 자신이 한 대답에 대한 합리적인 이유를 댈 수 있어야 했다.

스파르타인들은 간결한 한 마디속에 자신의 깊고 다양한 생각을 담도록 했다. 아이들은 평소에는 깊은 성찰을 통해 침묵을 지키는 방법을 터득했고, 질문을 받을때는 짧은 말로 자기 생각을 충분히 나타낼 수 있었다.

스파르타 단검이 짧고 날카롭듯 그들의 말도 사람들에게 정곡을 찌르는데가 있었다. 스파르타인은 관찰력이 좋았기 때문에 말을 듣는 사람들이 어떤 생각을 하는지 잘 파악하고 있었기 때문이다.

아테나이 한 연설가가 스파르타 사람들은 뭘 배우려는 생각이 없는 무식한 사람들이라고 비꼬자, 어떤 스파르타인이 즉각 받아치기를

“그렇소. 헬라스 사람들 가운데 당신같은 무례함을 배우지 않는 사람은 오직 우리들 뿐이니까요.”

스파르타인은 농담이라도 함부로 내던지지 않았으며, 말 속에는 반드시 중요한 의미가 숨어있어 듣는이로 하여금 한번 더 생각하게 하는 힘이 있었다.

어떤 청년이 친구에게 죽을때까지 싸우는 싸움닭을 주겠다는 약속을 했다. 그러나 스파르타인 친구가 말했다.

“아닐세. 상대를 죽일때까지 싸우는 놈을 주게나”

스파르타인들의 말은 하나의 격언처럼 간결하고 명쾌하다.

소크라테스는 스파르타인들은 체육을 사랑한다지만 그보다는 오히려 지혜와 재치를 더 사랑하는 민족이라며, 스파르타인들은 누구라도 투창의 명수처럼 압축된 훌륭한 말을 간명하게 쓸 수 있도록 교육받은 민족이라고 그들을 평가했다.(플라톤 『프로타고라스』)

스파르타인들은 일상 생활이 엄청난 절제와 엄격한 규율속에서 공동생활을 해나가기 때문에 오히려 전쟁을 할 때는 규율과 절제를 풀고 배불리 먹이고 마음껏 꾸밀수 있는 자유를 주었다. 그들에게 전쟁이란 일종의 포상휴가와 같은 것이었다. 이렇듯 전쟁 자체가 그들에게는 그동안 참아왔던 욕구를 맘껏 푸는 적극적이고 자발적인 활동이었을테니 누가 이런 국민들을 이길수 있겠는가.

스파르타를 헬라스 최강 국가로 만들어낸 리쿠르고스의 스파르타 정신은 훗날 리산드로스가 스파르타에 금은보화를 들여와 사람들이 사치와 탐욕에 눈이 멀어버리게 만들면서 한순간에 무너지게 되었다.

스파르타를 강건하게 만들어주었던 것은 그들의 절제와 인내심뿐만 아니라 엄격한 규율을 지키고 훌륭한 지도자들을 따르는 자발적 복종 덕분이기도 했다.

정치의 최고의 기술은 사람들로하여금 자발적으로 복종하고 싶도록 사람들의 마음을 움직이는 것인데 리쿠르고스처럼 훌륭한 지도자 정신이 사라지고 스파르타 사람들의 정신을 나약하게 만드는 자들이 지배를 하기 시작하자 스파르타는 곧 무너지게 되었다.

리쿠르고스는 책이나 이론을 남기지않았기에 그의 훌륭함은 역사책의 몇장으로 묻혀버렸지만 그 누구도 흉내낼수 없는 완벽한 정치체제를 본인 스스로의 행동으로 세워내었고 사람의 정신이 그 무엇보다 강한것이라는 것을 현실화시킨 독보적인 존재였다.

여담으로 그는 아마 최초의 페미니스트일것이다. 여자들에게도 남자들과 싸워 뒤쳐지지 않을 만큼 체력단련을 시켰고, 여자들의 지나친 연약함, 앞에 나서는 것에 대한 두려움, 수동적인 여성스런 태도를 버리도록 했다. 여인들로 하여금 열등한 존재가 아니라 덕과 명예를 갖춘 존재로서 고귀한 자존감을 느낄수 있도록 교육시켰다.

나도 빨리 갖고 싶다. 촌철살인의 지혜. 한마디로 책한권을 압도하는 예리한 통찰력.

사람들은 노후대책이라며
부동산, 저축, 주식, 연금, 보험등의 물질적인것을 쌓아가는것을
노후를 대비하는 것으로 생각하지만

과연 내 노후를 위해
행복에 대한 기억,
내가 부끄럼없이 잘 살았다는 자부심을
차곡히 쌓아가고 있는 사람은 얼마나 될까?

어르신들과 이야기를 나눠보면
그들이 즐겨하는 이야기는
자기 자신이 어려움을 극복하고
자기 인생의 신화를 이룩한 일들,
힘들었지만 행복했던 기억들을 자주 말씀하시는 걸 알수 있다.

인생은 과거에 자신이 일궈온 것들에 의지하여 살아간다는 말의 진정한 의미는
인간은 추억하며 살아가는 존재임을 의미하는것일지도 모르겠다.

"도대체 인간은 왜 나쁜 힘에 굴복하는가? 이성적인 소통의 힘은 왜 발휘되지 않는가? 어떻게 대응해야 하는가?"

— 친밀함과 공포심에 휘둘리지 않을 방법을 찾아야 한다


이론적으로는 절대적인 윤리와 같이 누구나 공통적으로 옳다고 여기는 이성적 윤리가 존재하지만, 세상에 나타나는 현실을 보면 올바른 이성이나 도덕은 도저히 먹히지가 않고 남을 괴롭히는 나쁜 힘의 논리만 잘 먹히는듯 보인다.

데이비드 흄은 『인간본성론』에서 윤리라는 것이 절대적인 옳은 가치가 아니라 사람들의 “정념(감정)이 이끌리는대로” “가까운 이익에 따라” “친밀도가 커지는 정도로” 각자의 윤리가 형성된다고 주장한다.

흄은 도덕이란 이성적 확신에서 나오는 행위가 아니라 감정(정념)에 좌우되는 행위일 뿐이라고 보았다.

그러므로 사람들의 도덕관이란 어떤 고정된 훌륭한 윤리에 근거하는 것이 아니라 사람들의 정념(감정)에 따라 선악판단이 이루어질 뿐이고, 그 감정이 유발하는 “유용성"에 취사선택 되는 것이다.

예를들어 타인의 비겁함, 불의, 자만은 우리의 마음에 해를 끼치기 때문에(자기 마음에 나쁜마음이 들게 만드는것은 쓸모가 없음) 우리는 그러한 성질을 보이는 이들에게 반감을 느끼고 그들이 악하고 나쁘다고 생각한다.

타인의 용기, 정의, 겸손은 사람들의 마음속에 좋은 마음을 일으키는 식으로(자기 마음에 좋은 마음이 드는것은 나에게 좋음) 이득이 되므로 그러한 성질을 보이는 이들에게 호의를 느끼게 되며 그들을 선하다고 생각한다.

결국 선악판단은 대상에 대한 자신의 감정이 내 자신에게 유용한가, 받아들일만한 가치가 있는가에 달려있는 것이다.

그렇다면 우리는 옳지 않는 사람이나 국가의 행위를 보며 분노하고 그것에 저항할 수 있어야 하는데 분명 그것을 보며 불의라는 나쁜 감정을 느꼈음에도 그것에 저항하지 못하고 악의에 굴복하게 되는것은 왜 그런것일까?

흄은 앞서 말한것처럼 인간의 윤리관은 “유용성"에 따라 취사선택 되는것이라고 했다.

이는 나쁜 감정이 들었더라도 악의에 굴복하는것이 자신에게 유리한것이라 판단된다면 불의에 저항하기 보다 받아들이게 되는 현상이 발생되는 것이다.

흄의 철학에 따르면 이성적 추론은 도덕적 당위를 이끌어낼 수 없다고 보았다.

아무리 논리적으로 이쪽이 윤리적으로 더 옳고 선한 행위이고, 저쪽이 더 나쁘고 악한 것이기에 따르지 말아야한다고 이성적인 추론으로 설득시키려 해봤자 그것만으로는 사람들을 올바른쪽으로 유인하기는 힘들다는 것이다.

흄이 보기에는 사람들은 이성적 추론으로 도덕관을 갖추는것이 아니라 자신의 정념(감정)에 대한 유용성만이 모든 도덕적 판단의 근거로 삼는다고 보았기 때문에 그것이 진짜라면 도덕관념은 자신의 생존에 얼마나 유리하고 쓸모있느냐로 얼마든지 바뀌게 되는것이다.

흄은 더욱이 시대가 달라지고 장소가 달라지면 유용한 것에 대한 감정들도 달라지기 때문에 도덕과 관습에 일반적인 규칙을 세우기 어렵다고 주장한다.

현재 중국이 전세계적으로 샤프파워의 만행을 저지르는 것은 이성적 추론으로 보면 저런 몰상식이 과연 통할까 싶지만, 중국은 이미 알고 있는 것이다.

에릭 홉스봄의 『혁명가:역사의 전복자들』에서 보면 게릴라를 제압하기가 힘든 이유가 적군이 민생에 밀접하게 들어와서 자국의 주민들과 친밀하게 지내면서 지역주민들의 동조와 지원을 전술적으로 활용하기 때문에 전투상황이 발생할 경우 자국의 주민들이 오히려 적군을 보호해주게 되는 현상으로 그들을 토벌하기 힘든 것이라 이야기한다.

흄 역시 이 친밀도가 도덕관에 미치는 영향에 대해 지적하고 있다. 인간 내면에 지닌 공감이라는 속성 때문에 우리 자신과 어떤 대상과의 관계가 가까워질수록 그러한 친숙함이란 정념때문에 도덕관념도 그에 따라 변화된다고 보았다.

사람들이 군중심리에 물드는 것이나 지역주의, 인맥, 학맥 등으로 뭉쳐져서 그들만의 도덕관이 별도로 형성되는 이유가 그들끼리의 친밀성을 도모하여 보편적인 옳고그름이 아닌 사적인 정념에 휘둘리게 만들어버리기 때문이다.

중국은 각국 제반 인프라에 깊숙히 개입하여 겉으로는 상대국 국민들의 협력을 유도하여 개개인의 사람들로 하여금 중국에 친밀감을 느끼게 만들면서 동시에 물밑에서는 은밀하게 샤프파워로 공포감을 조성하여 중국의 억압적인 위세를 거부하지 못하도록 만들고 있다.

문제는 중국이 펼치는 샤프파워가 오직 중국만의 이익을 위해 전세계 사람들을 중국을 위한 도구로 전락시키려 하고 있다는 것이 문제인것이다.

중국과 같이 나쁜 샤프파워로 사람들을 조종하려는 사람들은 이성적 판단이 정념과 결합되면 인간의 오성(지성)을 혼란시키며 불합리한 의견에도 아주 쉽게 유혹당한다는 속성을 아주 잘 알고 있는것처럼 보인다.

인간은 멀리 떨어진 대의보다는 눈앞의 생존과 작은 이익을 선택하는 영혼의 옹색함을 기본적으로 치료할 수가 없다.

자국의 이익을 지켜내지 못하고 중국의 샤프파워에 굴복한 사람들을 탓하며 그들보고 올바르게 처신하라며 훈수만을 두고 있는것은 아무 소용이 없다.

흄은 당장 눈앞의 이익을 위해 나쁜것을 선택하는 상황에서 인간이 할 수 있는 것이라고는 자신들의 상황을 변화시켜 정의의 준수가 직접적인 이익이 되도록 함과 동시에 나쁜 것을 따르면 이익과 거리가 멀어지도록 상황을 조성하는 것이 최선이라고 보았다.

과연 중국의 샤프파워는 어떻게 대응해야 효과적이겠는가? 정말 어려운 문제다.

흄은 인간은 정념의 노예이기에 이성이 무기력하다고는 했지만 이성의 힘을 완전히 부정한것은 아니다.

나쁜 힘에 굴복하는것이 지금 당장은 어쩔수 없어서 그것에 따른다고 해도 그것이 나쁘다는 것을 인지하는한 장기적인 관점에서는 그것에서 멀어지는 선택을 하게 될수 밖에 없다.

장기적으로 볼때는 결국 그러한 샤프파워에 굴복하는 것이 나의 생존에 불리할 수 밖에 없다는 것을 끝내는 알아차리게 될 것이기 때문이다.

국가적인 측면에서 사람들이 바른쪽으로 선택할 수 있는 유인을 제공해 준다면 눈앞의 이익만으로 나쁜힘에 인질잡히는 일은 줄일 수 있을 것이다.

몰상식한 샤프파워가 만연화되어 사람들의 삶속에 깊이 개입되는 식으로 습관화되어버리기 전에 사람들의 이성을 보호할 방책을 찾아야 한다.

사람들은 “나 하나쯤이야"하는 것의 여파가 얼마나 큰지 모르는것 같다.

내가 여기서 물러서는 순간 다음 사람들도 다 무너지는 것이 될 수 있다는 걸 생각하지 못하는 것 같다.

한 사람의 물러서지 않는 힘이 그 다음의 모든 사람들을 지켜내는 힘이 될 수 있다는 것을 왜 모를까?

내가 물러서지 않는다면 그 다음사람들도 물러서지 않기에 그 자체가 나를 지키고 서로를 지키는 든든한 방호벽이 된다는 사실을 왜 모르는 것일까?

아, 데이비드 흄의 『인간본성론』은 정말 파도파도 할 얘기가 끝없이 계속 나올꺼 같다. 흄은 오늘까지만 하고 접어야지.

흄의 윤리관에 힌트를 얻어 많은 사람들 앞에서 여론을 자기편으로 만드는 법을 이야기를 해보자면

흄은 사람들이 옳고 그름을 판단하는 도덕이란 이성적 확신이나 절대적 진리에서 나오는 것이 아니라 사람들의 그때그때의 감정(정념)에 좌우되고 그 감정의 유용성에 따라 윤리적 판단을 내리는것이라 보았다.

결론만 말하면 사람들로 하여금 좋은감정이 들게 하면 그것을 도덕적으로 옳다고 여기고, 나쁜감정이 들게 하면 그것은 도덕적으로 나쁘다고 여긴다는 것이다.

두사람이 대립하여 싸우는 일이 발생할 때, 상대를 이기기 위해 힘으로 굴복시키거나 망신을 주거나 비열한 방법을 쓰게 될 경우 그 당사자 혼자는 그렇게 이기면 쾌감을 느끼겠지만 지켜보는 사람들에게는 불쾌감을 느끼게 만들어 그 사람이 비도덕적이고 나쁜 사람으로 여기게 된다.

반면에 어떤 사람은 상대가 망신을 주거나 비열한 방법을 쓰더라도 적정선을 지키며 바르게 행동하려고 애쓰는 모습을 보일 경우 설령 그 싸움에서 지고 망신을 당한다 하더라도 지켜보는 사람들 입장에서는 그 사람이 정의롭고 도덕적이라 느끼게 된다.

사람들을 내편으로 만들고 싶으면 사람들을 포섭하기 위해 뒤에서 선동질하며 수작부리거나 비열한 짓거리를 하지 않더라도 그냥 혼자 묵묵히 바르게 처신하고 있는 것만으로도 결국 여론은 넘어오게 된다.

중요한것은 자신이 얼마나 사람들에게 바른 본보기가 되어주느냐이고, 그것은 주변의 많은 사람들에게 바른 도덕관을 심어주게 된다. 이것은 설령 겉으로 동조적인 여론이 드러나지 않더라도 그 자체로 많은 사람들에게 긍정적인 영향을 끼치게 되는 것이다.

진정한 파워란 그러한 긍정적인 영향을 얼마나 널리 펼쳐낼 수 있느냐에 달린것이지 당장 상대를 굴복시켰다고 생겨나는 것이 아니다.

그의 첫 책이었던 『인간본성론』(1740년작)은 불과 20대에 쓴 ‘그 자체로도 사상사에 끼친 영향력으로도 역대 최고의 철학서’라 꼽히는 책이다.

로크와 버클리의 경험주의를 이어받아 어딘가 빵꾸가 나 있었던 경험주의를 완성시킴으로써 그야말로 오류가 없고 반박불가능한 완벽한 경험주의 철학의 교본과 같은 대단한 책을 만들어냈지만 그 당시 사람들은 아무런 관심도 주지 않았다.

젊은 시절의 흄은 호기롭고 의기양양하게 자신의 주장에 반격이 들어올것을 기대하며 뭐든지 다 맞받아쳐줄테다하고 기다렸으나 흄 본인의 말대로 “그 책은 인쇄와 동시에 사장되었다"라고 할 정도로 대중들의 싸늘한 무관심 속에 읽히지조차 않아 큰 충격을 받았다.

그러나 그는 천성적으로 쾌활하고 긍정적인 성격 덕택에 금방 회복되었다고는 했으나 다만 이 책에서 나타나는 무신론적 속성(신의 존재를 남들에게 믿게 만들 수는 있지만 눈으로 보이지도 않는 대상의 존재유무를 판단하려는 것은 어리석은 일이다)때문에 교수직도 탈락하고 취업도 못하고 본인의 이름으로 저작활동도 하지도 못한 채 한동안 익명으로 책을 내야만 했다.

자신의 사상의 근원을 신의 말씀이나 기존의 권위적 학설에 의존하지 않고 오직 자기 감각기관으로 정확하게 써내려갔다는 이유로 철학사상 반박의 여지가 없는 명철한 사상을 제공하였음에도 오랜시간을 제대로된 일자리도 없이 어느 귀족의 가정교사나 전쟁터에 나가는 장군의 비서역할을 하면서 산전수전을 겪어야만 했다.

그래도 그가 40대에 쓴 『영국사』는 대박을 터트려 영국에서 가장 오래 사랑받는 베스트셀러가 되어 부와 명예를 한번에 얻게 되었다.

그러나 사실 흄의 진가는 『인간본성론』에서 비롯한 철학적 사유의 힘인데 당시에는 사람들이 알아봐주지 못했다. 훗날 많은 철학자들이 흄의 사상에 영향을 받아 각자의 이론을 수립해 발전되어가면서 그의 진가가 간접적으로 증명되었을 뿐이다.

흄의 사상은 칸트로 하여금 ‘독단의 선잠에서 깨워줬다’며 『순수이성비판』에 영향을 끼쳤으며, 귀납의 문제는 칼 포퍼의 반증주의 철학에게 영향을 끼쳤고, 흄의 윤리론은 공리주의 학자인 제러미 벤담과 존 스튜어트 밀의 사상적 근원을 제공해주었으며, 이사야 벌린의 소극적 자유개념의 도덕적 다원주의 등 정말 다양한 철학자들에게 아이디어를 제공해준 책이다. 아인슈타인마저 흄의 열렬한 팬이자 자신의 상대성 이론이 흄의 저서를 읽고 영감을 받은것이었다고 할 정도이니 흄의 『인간본성론』은 다양한 이야기거리가 쏟아져 나오는 보물보따리 같은 책이라 할수 있다.

같은 스코틀랜드 출신이자 경제학의 창시자 아담 스미스와 평생에 걸친 절친이었고, 말년에 루소와의 해프닝 등 웃픈 사건들이 여담으로 전해지는 학자였지만 곰돌이 푸우같은 그의 초상화처럼 타고난 착하고 쾌활한 밝은 성격 덕분에 힘들고 괴로울 수 있었던 사건들을 그나마 웃플 수 있게 해주었다고 본다.

그런 성격은 문체에도 드러나 아무리 심각한 내용도 쉽고 위트있게 따뜻한 글을 써내는게 어떤것인지를 보여준다. 어떤 계파나 당파에 속하지 않았기 때문에(경험주의학파 계열이었다 해도 기존의 경험론을 동조한것이 아니라 비판해버림) 당시에는 그의 사상에 대한 어떤 동조론도 얻을수 없어 인기가 없었지만 오히려 그럴수 있었기 때문에 흄의 사상이 오류없이 명쾌한 것이 될수 있었다고 생각한다.

흄의 『인간본성론』은 번역에 따라 『인성론』, 『인간이란 무엇인가』 의 제목을 붙기도 하는데 『A Treatise of Human Nature』으로 제목이 같은것으로 봐서 제목번역만 다른 뿐 같은 책으로 보인다. 이 글에서는 『인간본성론』으로 부르겠다.

흄이 『인간본성론』을 쓴 이유: 인간에 대한 이해가 모든 학문의 기초이다.

흄이 생각하기를 모든 학문은 많든 적든 간에 인간의 본성과 관련되어 있기에 그 학문을 연구하기 위해서는 근본적으로 인간의 본성으로 돌아와 여러 원리를 해명할 수 있어야 한다고 보았다.

특히 이러한 인간 본성의 학문을 연구하는 기초적인 방법은 경험과 관찰에 두지 않으면 안되었기에 그래서 흄은 로크에서 버클리로 이어진 경험주의적 관념을 이어받아 인간 본성을 연구함에 있어서 경험주의를 기준으로 인간의 본성을 분별해 나간다.

흄은 우선 기존의 경험론자들의 주장 즉, “인간의 감각으로 얻어진 경험만이 지식으로 인정될 수 있다는 것"이 옳은 것이 되기 위해서는 그 감각을 주관하는 나라는 “내 자아"의 존재에 대한 확신을 할 수 있어야 한다고 말한다.

쉽게 말해 데이터를 제공해주는 기계가 확실히 존재하는지 확신할 수 있어야 그 기계에서 나오는 데이터도 확신할수 있다는 것이다. 만약 그 기계라는 것이 존재하는지 허상인지 알 수 없다면 거기서 나오는 데이터 또한 과연 확신을 할 수 있겠냐는 것이다.

우리가 내 자신 자아라는 것을 파악하고자 할때, 과연 나라는 존재에 대해서 내 자신이 명확하고 확실하게 볼수 있느냐 한다면 흄은 명확하게 볼 수 없다고 주장한다. (수행자들이 참 나를 찾기 위해서 평생을 바친 수행을 하는것을 떠올리면서 그래 쉽게 보이는게 아니지~하고 흄의 주장을 이해했다.)

흄이 주장하는 것은 스스로가 들여다 볼때 자기 자신이라고 여기게 되는 것은 단지 나의 생각이나 나의 감정과 같은 순간적이고 단발적인 “인상"에 비추어 그것이 나라고 여길 뿐이지 나라는 주체는 존재하지 않는다고 주장한다. 나라고 여기는 것은 단지 “감각의 꾸러미"일뿐 경험하는 자아란 존재하지 않는 허상일 뿐이라는 것이다.

나라는 존재의 실체가 본래 없는것이라면 내가 감각기관의 주체라는 것이 부정될 것이고, 그렇게 된다면 감각기관을 통해 얻어진 지식에 대해서도 확신할 근거 또한 없어지게 된다. 나란 존재는 단지 정념에 휘둘려 감정적으로 왔다갔다하는 주관없는 감각의 꾸러미일 뿐이고 그러한 감각기관을 통해서 얻어진 지식이란 유동적이고 변화무쌍한 것에 해당하므로 그것을 통해 나오는 지식은 확신 할 수 없고 단지 “개연성"만을 주장할 수 있을 뿐이라고 말한다.

경험주의를 완성시키려 그것의 인과성을 따지다 귀납의 문제와 인과관계의 문제를 발견함: 경험론은 그저 개연적인 것일뿐임을 명심하자

본래 논리적인 철학자들은 자신의 이론을 증명하기 위해 인과성을 중시할 수 밖에 없는데, 흄이 감각기관의 주체를 따지며 나라는 존재에 대해서 확신할 수 있느냐를 짚고 넘어간 이유는 경험주의를 논리적으로 파악하여 확증하고자 하는 이유에서 그랬다고 본다.

경험주의는 자신의 지식의 근원을 자신의 감각기관에 두는데, 그렇다면 그 감각기관의 근원이 되어주는 나라는 존재에 대한 확실성이 뒷받침되어야 하는 것이다. 그래야 경험주의가 그냥 색안경 골라끼는대로식이 아닌 진짜 검증된 지식으로 인정받을 수 있게 되는것이다.

아마도 흄은 자기자신의 감각기관과 경험을 통한 판단력에 대한 신뢰가 있었기 때문에 그것을 논리적으로도 증명해보이고 싶었던것이고, 그 증명을 위해서라면 나라는 “자아"의 존재에 대한 실체가 증명되어야만 했다.

그런데 어허? 자아를 못찾겠네? 실체가 증명안되는걸 어쩔? ㅡ> 멘붕
그러면 이런 멘붕스런 경험주의의 오류를 최소화 할 방법은 ㅡ> 귀납의 문제와 인과의 문제라도 최소화시키자

귀납의 문제: 수백년의 수만개의 증거를 쌓아봐도 단한개의 반례로 다 무너짐. 확증불가.

우리는 일상생활에서 추론이 필요할때 인과성(=인과관계=원인과 결과)을 기준으로 판단한다.

경험주의적인 관찰은 흔히 귀납식 관찰이라 불리우는데, 우리가 수백년에 걸쳐서 백조만 보아왔다면 앞으로 보게 될 같은 새도 역시 백조일것이라 “기대한다”. 하지만 만약 단 한마리의 흑조를 보게 된다면 수백년에 걸친 경험이 모두 틀린것이 되어버리고 만다. 그렇기에 현재 아무리 많은 경험을 통해서 수치적으로 확률 100프로에 가까워보이는 경험적 근거가 있다고 한들 미래에도 반드시 그러할것이라 확신할 수 없다는 귀납의 문제가 발생한다.

이에 따라 흄은 경험주의적 지식은 단지 관념의 연합(귀납의 끝없는 나열)이거나 심리적 기대일 뿐이지 논리적 증거는 될 수 없다고 주장한다.

인과의 문제: 동일성, 시간, 장소의 연접관계를 인과관계로 혼동하지 마라. 안그럼 뇌피셜 된다.

또하나의 문제는 바로 인과관계의 문제인데, 경험론자들이 흔히 저지르는 오류가 시간적 선후관계를 인과관계로 잘못 착각한다는 것이다.

예를들어 “A가 지나간뒤에 B가 발생된다"고 했을때 이것이 설령 매일같이 반복된다 하더라도 반드시 A가 B의 원인이라고는 볼수 없다는 것이다. 그냥 시간의 순서상 “해가 동쪽에서 뜨고 서쪽에서 진다"식의 연접한 관계일 뿐일 가능성도 배제해서는 안된다고 주장한다.

그러나 우리는 흔이 이러한 연접관계를 인과관계로 오해해서 불필요한 과대망상을 일으키게 되는 경우들이 많다. “내가 이 행동을 하니까 저사람이 저 행동을 하더라” 두가지가 동시간에 발생한 그냥 별개의 사건일 수 있는데 시간상 나란히 놓여졌다는 이유로 별개의 사건을 인과관계로 엮어서 뇌피셜하게 되는 경우가 바로 흄이 지적한 인과성의 문제이다.

흄은 단순히 동일성, 시간, 장소의 연접관계만으로 추리하여 전혀 상관없는 별개의 두 객체를 인과관계로 묶어버리는 일을 발생시켜서는 안된다고 주장한다. 대부분 오류를 일으키는 뇌피셜들은 대부분이 이러한 형태에서 발생하는 것이다.

흄은 이러한 경험주의의 한계 (귀납의 문제와 인과문제)를 지적하면서 우리의 모든 경험들로 비롯한 지식들은 ‘얼마나 보다 그럴듯한가’에 대한 개연성에서 얻어지는 것일 뿐이지 그것을 확실한 추론에 의해서 합리적으로 얻어지는 것처럼 독단하거나 오판해서는 안된다고 주장한다.

이러한 경험주의의 문제점들을 지적하면서 다른 경험론자들로부터 회의론자로 치부 되어버린 흄이었지만, 흄은 경험주의를 비관한것이 아니라 단지 우리의 이성이 완벽할 수 없다는 것에 대해 인정할 것은 인정하고 더더욱 인간의 감각기관을 비롯한 이성과 경험들을 오류없이 바르게 잘 형성시켜나가야 한다는 ‘온건한 회의주의’를 주장한 것이다. (경험주의가 아예 쓸모없다 해버렸으면 그냥 회의론자인데, 경험론의 단점들이 있음에도 그런 불확실한 이성을 부여잡아 잘 쓸수 있도록 노력해야 한다는데 ‘온건한’ 회의주의자라 불리게 된것.)

흄은 경험주의를 단순히 비판한 것이라기 보다는 경험주의가 발생할 수 있는 오류를 최소화하여 학문에 잘 적용시킬 수 있는 일종의 경험주의 가이드라인을 제시해 준 것이라 생각한다.

흄의 『인간본성론』에서 나타난 내용들은 인간의 판단으로 오류를 저지를 수 있는 부분들을 명확하게 지적하고 있으며 특히 요즘 같은 뇌피셜이 남발되는 세상에서 많이 읽혀져야할 책이라고 본다.

데이비드 흄은 <원시계약에 관하여>라는 논문에서 당시 영국 국민을 둘로 나누고 있었던 두개의 정당 즉, 토리당(왕당파)과 휘그당(의회파)의 이론들을 문제삼아 비판하고 있다.

이와는 반대로 로크의 사회계약설은 국가 정부는 인민의 최초의 동의(원시계약)로부터 발생했으며 그 동의는 현재까지 효력이 유지된다고 주장한다.

그들에 따르면 인간은 모두 평등하게 태어났기 때문에 군주나 정부에 대한 충성의무는 각자의 동의와 약속에 의하지 않는다면 부과될 수 없는 것이고, 더구나 이 약속도 군주(정부)가 자신을 잘 보호해주지 않는다면 충성의 의무는 소멸한다며 왕권에 대한 저항권을 주장하였다.

이에 흄은 사회계약론자들의 이러한 주장은 역사상의 사실과 어긋난다는 점을 지적한다. 정부의 기초가 되는 이 원시계약이 조상의 동의에 의해 자손들 끝대에 이르기까지 구속한다는 점은 제쳐두고서라도 세계 어느역사를 보더라도 국가의 최초의 수립이 인민들의 동의에 의해 수립된 역사는 없다는 것이다.

흄은 최고의 명예가 주어져야 하는 권력이란 신의 대행자나 사회계약으로 그 명분이 만들어지는 것이 아니라 법과 제도의 체계를 확립하여 인민의 평화와 행복과 자유를 확실하게 만들어주는 자에게서 비롯되는 것이며, 당파를 만들어내고 당파적인 대립을 격화시키는 것으로는 인민을 위한 정부를 만들어낼 수 없다고 주장한다.

당파적 대립을 격화시키는 자는 서로 도와야할 같은 나라 사람들 사이에서도 격렬한 적의를 만들어내기 때문이고, 그러한 갈등은 바른 이성이 아닌 편협적 편견으로 국정을 운영하게 됨으로 그 피해는 인민들이 고스란히 겪게 된다.

또한 국가의 최초의 수립이나 권력자가 바뀔때에는 그 속성이 인민들에게 익숙한 기존권력을 탈취하는데서 이루어지기 때문에 왕권신수설이나 사회계약론같은 허황된 명분으로 인민들의 복종을 갈구해봤자 오히려 적대감과 거부감만 느껴지게 된다고 하였다.

새로운 세력이 정당성을 확보하고 인민의 지지를 얻기 위한 유일한 방법은 오직 시간뿐이라며, 오직 시간만이 그들의 권위를 굳게 다지며 시간만이 인민들의 정신에 조금씩 작용함으로써 그 정신을 권위에 조화시켜 그 권위가 정당하고 합리적으로 여겨지도록 국가를 잘 다스리고 인민을 위해 노력해야 한다고 말한다.

인간의 마음을 어느 곳으로 향하게 이끄는 가장 큰 원인은 습관이다. 사람들의 생각이 어떤 대상으로 향하게 하기 위해서는 사람들이 그 대상에게 익숙해질 시간이 필요하다.

새로운 권력을 보여주려고 하는 자는 국민들이 그동안 오래도록 습관화 된 기존 권력의 모양새에서 벗어나 새로운 권력의 모양새에 익숙해질때까지 인내심있게 버텨내는 것이 필요하며, 새로운 권력의 행태가 실제로 사람들의 안녕과 생존에 유리한 이익을 가져다주게 된다면 정부에 대한 인민의 복종은 그제서야 비로서 얻어지게 되는 것이다.

시간과 습관은 인간의 정신에 권위를 각인시키는 가장 강력한 원천이다. 인민들이 어떤 정부에 오랫동안 복종해왔다면, 그들은 그 정부를 정당하다고 믿기 시작한다. 권위의 정당성은 원시적인 계약서에서 나오는 것이 아니라, 세대를 거쳐 쌓인 익숙함과 그 통치가 가져다주는 실제적인 이익에서 나온다.

칸트는 『계몽이란 무엇인가에 대한 답변』이란 논문에서 인간이 미성년 상태에 머무르고 있기 때문에 자기 스스로 판단하는 힘을 갖추지 못하는 것이라 말한다.

그러나 그것은 칸트의 표현대로 인간의 상태가 아닌 가축의 상태일 뿐이다. 그러한 가축들은 가짜 계몽을 퍼트리는 사람들의 도구로 이용당할 뿐이다. 가짜 계몽을 퍼트리는 사람들은 자신들의 가축들이 자기 스스로의 힘으로 걸어나가고자 할때 겁을 주며, 자기 스스로의 힘으로 판단하려는 것을 무모한 짓으로 여긴다.

그러나 자기 스스로의 힘으로 걸어나가고 판단하는 것은 처음 몇번만 넘어지고 실수하고 깨지고나면 결국에는 잘 걸을 줄 알게된다.

그렇게 처음에는 미숙하더라도 자신의 정신과 지성을 자기 힘으로 스스로 갈고 닦아감으로써 자신의 미성숙으로부터 풀려나는데 성공한 사람, 더 나아가 안전하게 나아가는데까지 성공하는 사람은 소수에 불가하다.

그러나 그 소수들은 결국 스스로 생각하라는 인간의 소명을 자기 주변에 퍼뜨리게 될 것이다.

계몽을 위해서는 자유 이외에 그 어떤 것도 요구되지 않는다.
자신의 이성을 공적으로 사용할 자유가 요구될 뿐이다.

사람들 앞에서서 자신의 생각을 용감하게 말하라.
그리하여 과감하게 현명해져라.

획일성에 갇혀져 살아온 사람들은 세상의 다양한 차이를 분별해 내지 못한다.

흑백논리가 그래서 나오는 것이다. 세상에 두가지밖에 존재하지 않는 줄 안다. 나빠보이는것은 무조건 흑쪽, 좋아보이는것은 뭐든 싸잡아 백쪽. 그런식으로 살다보면 점점 보는눈이 없어진다.

우리가 자유주의를 지켜내야 하는 이유는 단순히 자유롭게 살기 위해서만은 아니다. 그래야 아주 다양한 세상이 무엇인지 우리가 알고 배울수 있게 되는 것이고, 그렇게 다양한 것들을 맛봐야 그것들을 분별해 내는 능력 또한 얻을 수 있게 된다.

자유가 없는 세상 속 사람들은 다양성을 맛본적이 없기 때문에 기본적으로 분별력을 갖추지 못한다. 붉은색 계열은 죄다 빨강으로 치부하고, 흙빛계열은 죄다 검은색으로 치부하는 식으로 세상을 살아간다.

붉은색에도 진빨강, 빨강, 연빨강, 다홍, 분홍, 연분홍 이러한 차이가 있고 이것들이 모두 독립된 다른 것임을 인지하지 못한다. 그들 기준에서는 그냥 빨강으로 퉁쳐버릴 뿐이다.

선무당이 사람잡는것은 그러한 분별력을 갖추지 못한채 자기가 보는 수준이 전부인줄 확신해서 남을 함부로 재단하게 될 경우 그러한 폐단이 발생되는 것이다.

자기 깜냥으로 보이는 만큼만 멋대로 다른사람들을 판단하여 상대를 흑과 백 어느 한쪽으로만 몰아가는 사람들은 인간의 행복추구권에 속한 타인의 자유로운 “자기결정권"을 침해하는 사람들이다.

인간은 누구나 자기 스스로의 의사에 따라 자기 재량껏 자신의 정체성을 결정하고 자유롭게 행동할 권리를 가지고 있다.

자유가 없는 획일한 사회에서는 사람들의 자기 정체성 결정권을 인정하지 않기 때문에 흑과 백 어느 한쪽으로만 사람들을 몰아가고 그것에서 벗어난 존재들을 존중해주지 않는다.

우리는 사람들과 어울리면서 내 편협한 기준이 세상의 전부인줄 알고 다른 사람들을 내 편협한 잣대에 재어보고 자신의 기준에 상대를 함부로 틀어쥐려고 한다. 이러한 행태는 일종의 폭력과 억압이 될 수 있다.

획일적 세상에서 사는 사람들은 이것이 폭행이자 상대의 자기결정권을 침해하는 행위임을 인지하지 못한다. 자기 기준에 맞지 않는것은 상대가 거짓말을 하는거라 여기며 자신이 잘못보고 있을 수 있다는 것을 생각치 못한다.

자유가 없는 세상에서는 이러한 폐단들이 생겨나서 사람들이 서로를 곡해하고 자기잣대로 억압하는 일이 빈번하기 때문에 이러한 불행한 일들을 막기 위해서는 사람들로하여금 자유로운 삶이란 무엇인지 알게 해줘야 한다.

자유로운 세상이란 내가 모르는 세상이 있을 수 있음을 인정하는 세상이고, 나와는 다른 다양한 것들도 똑같이 존중받을 권리가 있기에 내가 함부로 남을 재단지어 나의 잣대안으로 상대를 구겨넣어서는 안되는 세상이다.

정치인이나 유명인들의 명연설문들을 보면 갈등이 첨예했던 시절 좀 더 높은 차원의 비전을 제시함으로써 서로 반목하는 사람들을 하나의 가치로 단합시키는 기적을 만들어내는 공통점을 찾을 수 있었다.

그 어느쪽도 공감할 수 밖에 없고 그 어느 누구도 부정할 수 없는 가치를 찾아 사람들로 하여금 그 하나의 방향을 다함께 바라보게 하는 힘.

비전 제시 능력.

그것이 혼란스러운 시대가 요구하는 리더십의 가장 중요한 덕목일 것이다.

그뿐만이 아니다. 궁극의 가치를 찾아내는 사고력의 힘은 개개인의 삶속에서도 갈등을 줄이고 자신의 행복과 안정을 위해 도움이 되는 자질이다.

그뿐만이 아니라 내 인생을 살아감에 있어서도 돈을 벌거나 직업을 얻거나 온갖 부수적인 목표들을 하나로 묶는 자기만의 ‘인생의 꼬챙이’가 있어야 큰 틀에서 흔들림 없이 주관대로 나아갈 수 있게 되는데 이 모든것은 내가 삶을 살아가면서 좀더 궁극적이고 좀더 바른 앎을 추구하려는 자세에서 부수적으로 얻어지는 능력이다.

결국 궁극적 가치를 추구하며 삶을 살아간다는 것은 어느 특별한 사람들만이 갖춰야할 능력과 자질이 아니라 행복하고 갈등없는 삶을 살아가기 위해 모든 이들이 갖춰야하는 자질이다.

이러한 궁극의 가치를 제시할 줄 아는 능력은 자신의 인생을 흔들림 없이 만들어줄 뿐만 아니라 서로다른 다양한 사람들이 공통적으로 존중하고 공감할 수 있는 가치(꼬챙이)를 찾아 사람들의 자유를 온전히 지켜내면서도 동시에 하나로 화합할 수 있게 하는데 그 힘을 발휘한다.

갈등이 첨예한 사람들간에 동일한 공통점을 찾아내고 그것을 드러내주어 그 모두가 동의하고 공감하며 한마음 한뜻으로 동참하게 만들어주는것은 통합을 이루고자 하는 사회에 절실한 요소이다.

프로타고라스는 그것을 못했기 때문에 아무리 아는것이 많았다 하더라도 혼란한 세상을 더 복잡하게 만들어 버려서 끝내는 욕을 먹게 된 것이고, 자신은 아무것도 알지못한다고 하던 소크라테스는 궁극의 가치를 찾아내려고 노력하던 삶을 그 스스로가 살아갔고 사람들에게 그 방식을 전파함으로써 혼란스러웠던 아테네 사람들에게 자기스스로 가치기준을 세워 혼란을 바로잡을 수 있는 힘을 얻도록 해주었기 때문에 시대를 초월한 찬사를 얻게 된 것이다.

지금 혼란스러운 내 주변의 삶속에서 사람들을 한마음 한 뜻으로 같은 방향을 바라보게 할 수 있는 “그 무엇” 은 과연 무엇일까?

"모든것을 아는자(프로타고라스) vs 아무것도 모르는자(소크라테스)"

이쪽에서도 정의를 말하고, 저쪽에서도 정의를 말한다.

분명 둘다 똑같이 자신들이 정의롭다고 하는데 그렇게 정의와 정의가 함께하면 서로 기쁘고 뜻이 맞아야 하거늘 서로 마주보는 순간 척을지고 서로에게 부정하다 삿대질하는건 왜일까?

소피스트 시절 이쪽의 정의도 맞고, 정반대의 저쪽의 정의도 전부 맞다며 프로타고라스가 인간 만물척도론을 설파했지만, 사람들은 그에게 다시 물었다. 아니 그래서 정답은 뭐란 말입니까?

철학이 불협화음을 일으키며 대립되는 이론의 소용돌이에 휘말려 어느쪽으로도 결정지을 수 없는 것처럼 보였다.

원래 철학이란 그렇게 아무대답도 못하는 허무한 짓거리일 뿐 지식같은거 다 소용없다며 대충살자 하고 있을때, 소크라테스는 그런 소피스트들의 회의론에 맞서 지식을 옹호한다.

소크라테스의 주된 관심사는 소피스트들이 지식을 훼손시키면서 도덕과 국가의 토대를 위협하던 궤변론의 도전에 맞서는 것이다. 그 시대의 회의론으로 비롯된 윤리적, 정치적 오류들이 진리의 의미에서 볼때 완전한 오해에서 생기며 이러한 문제들을 풀어내기 위해서는 “지식"이 전체상황을 푸는 열쇠임을 보았던 것이다. 이에 인간 이성의 능력에 대한 낙관론적 신념을 가지고 사명을 수행했다.

그의 사명이란 어떤 철학적 체계를 구축하는 것이었다기 보다는 사람들이 올바르게 살 수 있도록 그들에게 진리와 덕에 대한 회의감이 아닌 사랑을 불러일으키고, 그들이 올바르게 사유하도록 돕는 것이었다. 그는 어떤 이론을 제시하지 않고, 그 스스로 지식을 얻는 올바른 방법을 실천하고(산파법:질문을 하고 스스로 돌아봐 깨닫는것), 그것을 실행하고, 진리와 덕을 행하는 모범을 직접 보임으로써 사람들에게 그것을 자연히 따르게끔 하였다.

소크라테스는 우리가 진정 알아야 할 것은 ‘우리의 삶’과 ‘우리 자신을 어떻게 이끌어 나갈지’의 문제라고 보았다. 우리에게 절실한 문제는 다음과 같은 것이다. 선이란 무엇인가? 참이란 무엇인가? 정의란 무엇인가? 우리가 이것에 대한 대답을 우리 스스로 할수 있게 된다면 우리의 삶은 달라질 것이라 보았다.

그는 아테네 곳곳을 돌아다니면서 소피스트들에게 물들어 기본개념조차 탑재안된 아테네 시민들에게 한결같은 질문을 던졌다.

“우정이란 무엇인가?”, “용기란 무엇인가?”, “정의란 무엇인가?”, “신념이란 무엇인가?”…..

이미 이러한 답을 알고 있다고 생각하는 사람들에게 이러한 질문을 던짐으로써 그 스스로 자신의 대답을 돌아보도록 만들었다.

예를 들어 어떤 사람이 ‘용기란 참아내는 능력이다.‘라고 주장한다면 소크라테스는 다음과 같이 되물을 것이다.

“그렇다면 고집은 무엇인가? 고집부리는 사람도 남다른 집요함 즉, 인내를 보여준다. 이거도 용기인가?” 하는 식이다.

이러한 소크라테스식 대화법은 일거양득의 효과를 거두었다. 사람들의 무지를 드러내주었다. 그리고 그 과정을 지켜보는 구경꾼들이 근본적인 철학의 의문에 대해서 관심을 가지게 하여 그들을 논의에 끌어들였다.

물론 소크라테스는 최종적인 대답을 내놓지는 않았다. 하지만 제기한 문제에 대한 관심을 이끌어 냄으로써 사람들이 그 대답을 찾는 과정에서 생기는 어려움을 극복하고 스스로 올바르게 생각할 수 있도록 했다.

그는 사람들을 설득하며 그들의 생각을 변화시켰다. 그는 사람들에게 모든 것에 대해 의문을 가지고 접근하라고 가르쳤으며, 논리의 힘으로 개개인의 무지를 일깨워주었다.

소크라테스가 가장 널리 알려진 이유는 철학의 중요한 기본 개념에 대해 날카로운 문제를 제기하기 시작한 철학자였기 때문이다. 그는 자신이 가르칠 것이라고는 질문하는 방법뿐이라고 말하곤 했다. 그래서인지 살아생전 자신의 철학이 담긴 저작하나 남기지 않았다.

소크라테스는 우리가 그동안 당연하게 생각하고 의심없이 받아들인 정의들에 대해 스스로 새롭게 질문해보고 인내심을 가지고 깊이 성찰해 보라고 말한다.

그와같이 보편적 판단을 새롭게 전개해 나가는 것이 소크라테스적 방법의 목적이었다. 우리의 시급한 과제는 우리의 관념을 명료하게 만들고, 용어의 참된 의미를 바르게 이해하고, 사용하는 개념들을 정확하게 정의하고, 우리가 말하는 바를 정확하게 인식하는것이다.

그러므로 우리는 자신의 견해를 지탱하는 자기만의 이유를 가져야 하며, 자신의 주장을 증명하고, 사유하고, 추측하지말고, 사실검증을 거치게 하고, 거기에 따라 그것을 수정하고 바로잡아야 한다.

내가 모든 기준의 척도이기때문에 내말이 옳고 나는 다 알고있다는 식의 자세는 세상의 그 무엇도 제대로 아는게 없는 사람이다. 바르게 알고자 하지 않고 내가 보이는대로 내 감각기관이 나를 속이는대로 그대로 믿어버리기 때문이다. 프로타고라스와 그의 시대가 그래서 혼란과 갈등만 심했던 것이다.

아무것도 모르기에 제대로 알고자 하는것이고, 아무것도 잘 모르기에 지식에 대해 신중하고 정확하게 접근하고자 하는 자세가 나온다. 이것이 세상을 제대로 분별해내고 틀린것을 바로잡을수 있는 힘으로 작용한다.

우리가 바로 지금 이러한 소크라테스식 철학을 해야 하는 이유는 그동안 정치인들을 비롯한 많은 사람들이 자신의 당파나 자기 세력에게 이로운대로 세상의 근본 개념들을 왜곡시켜왔기 때문이다. 자유, 평화, 평등, 인권, 애국심, 보수, 진보 등 많은 것들이 왜곡된 개념으로 쓰여지면서 한국사회를 바로세우지 못하게 하고 있다.

근본 개념들이 왜곡된채 우리가 잘못 인지를 하고 있으면 세상의 문제들도 바르게 풀리지가 않고 점점 꼬여만 간다.

세상이 정답대로 되어가지 않고 있을때나 뭐가 진실인지 모를때는 내가 현재 상식으로 알고 있는 개념들이 애초에 잘못 정의내려진것은 아닌가 다시 돌이켜서 소크라테스처럼 “나는 아무것도 모른다"라는 무지상태로 돌아가 세상의 지식과 개념들을 기존의 고정관념 다 지우고 처음부터 재검토 해봐야 할 필요가 있다.

마치 소크라테스가 산파술을 펼칠때 상대의 말속에 개념들을 꼬투리 잡아 집요하게 물어지듯이 하나하나의 개념들의 정의를 처음부터 다시 바로세워보는 치밀한 작업이 반드시 필요한 시점이다.

이제는 지식은 넘쳐난다. 얼마든지 얻고 싶은만큼 편하게 지식을 얻을 수 있는 세상이다. 그러나 그만큼 가짜 지식들도 넘쳐난다. 세상에 널린 지식들 중 어떤 것을 취하며 자신의 가치기준으로 삼고 그것으로 자신의 인생을 어떻게 만들어나갈 것인가는 지식을 바라보는 “분별력"이 없으면 좋고 바른것을 찾아낼수 없다.

그러한 분별력은 오직 자기힘으로 키워내야만하는 힘이며 이것은 소크라테스식 철학 방법으로 길러지는 것이다.
