갑자기 드는 생각이다.

권력에의 의지는 어쩌면 자신의 고립과 무능력의 해소를 위한 최종의 돌파구로서 작용하는것이 아닌가 하는 생각을 해본다. 일종의 억압받는 자신을 벗어나고자하는 몸부림과 같은 것이다.

자기 스스로 자신을 어쩌지 못하는 무능력은 권력행사를 통해 무제한적 자유에 대한 갈증을 해소시키게 된다.

고립되고 억압된 자신이 권력이라는 도구를 사용하여 타인을 마음대로 좌지우지 함으로써 자유인이 된 것처럼 느껴지는 것이다.

니체는 자유에의 갈망이 권력에의 의지로 표출되는 것이라고 했다.

그러나 니체는 자유에의 갈망을 해소해 줄 권력에의 의지는 그어떤 권력도구나 세상의 권위에 의지하여 그것에 기대어 힘을 발휘하는 것이 아니라 세상의 그 어떤것에도 속박되지 않고 자기 스스로의 힘에만 의지하여 마음껏 자신에게 충실하며 자신의 존재를 실현시켜 낼 때 비로소 자유의 갈망이 해소될 수 있고 이러한 힘을 발휘하는 사람이 자신의 가능성을 최대한 실현시켜나가는 초인(superman) 즉, 위버멘쉬(Übermensch)라고 하였다.

니체가 주장하는 바와 달리 세상사람들의 권력에의 의지가 자기 스스로의 힘의 발현이 아닌 권력이란 도구의 힘을 빌린 의존된 것이라면, 권력이란 도구를 써서 남을 멋대로 할수 있을때는 자유를 만끽하겠지만 그것이 없으면 여전히 억압받고 고립된 평범한 인간일 뿐이기에 이러한 권력은 진정한 힘이 아닌것이다.

자의든 타의든 고립되고 억압된 자신이 자유를 만끽하고자 남을 억압시켜 타인의 의지를 꺾고 소외시키는 식으로 권력을 사용하게 된다면 나를 해방시켜준 그 압도적인 힘은 모두를 소외시키게 되어 결국 나 스스로를 다시 또 고립을 자처하는 상황으로 몰아가게 된다.

결국 진정 자신을 자유롭게 하고 모든 고립에서 해방시킬 진정한 권력에의 의지는 그 외부의 무엇에도 의존하지 않은 채 타인을 조복시키는데 그힘을 쓰는것이 아닌 내 자신을 다스리는데 써야 하는 힘이다. 남을 내뜻대로 만드는게 아닌 내 자신을 내 의지대로 초극할수 있을때만이 진정한 권력에의 의지를 만끽할 수 있는 것이다.

인간은 동물과는 달리 자기 안에서 서로 대립하는 충동을 다스려왔다. 이 덕택에 인간은 자기 운명의 주재자가 될 수 있는 것이다.

세상에서 가장 권력이 강한 자는 모든것을 다 가진자가 아니라 아무것도 필요치 않는자라는 말이 있다.

진정한 권력과 자유는 그 무엇에도 의존하지 않은채 오직 자기 스스로 홀로 존재함 속에서 힘을 발휘할수 있는 자에게서 나온다.

어떤 사람들은 원초적 욕구나 채우며 시시껄렁한 재미나 즐길 뿐 하루하루 먹고사는데만 급급해 사는데,

도대체 어떤 사람은 어떤 마음을 품고 살길래 공익에 대한 헌신을 추구하며 높은 이상을 품고 살아가는 것일까?

존 스튜어트 밀은 『대의정부론』에서 인간은 지식을 쌓지 않으면 공익에 헌신하고자 하는 마음이 안들고 말초적인 사적이익에만 만족하며 살게 된다고 말한다.

많이 알고 공부해서 지식을 쌓고 자기개발을 하게 되면 어느샌가 자신만의 잠재력과 능력을 발견하게 되고 그것으로 나만 잘 사는 것이 아니라 남도 잘 살수 있게 해주고 싶은 이타적인 마음이 들게 된다고 한다.

밀은 이타적이고 공익적인 정신은 타고난 것이나 특별한 재능이 있어서가 아닌 지식을 많이 쌓다보면 누구나 저절로 그렇게 되는 것이므로 자신의 관심분야에 대한 지식을 많이 쌓아 전문가가 될 수 있도록 노력하여야 하며 그러한 노력들이 민주주의를 잘 발현시킬 대의정부가 이루어지는 밑바탕이 되는 것이라 주장한다.

공부를 많이하고 좋은 책을 많이 읽어야 하는 이유는 지식을 뽐내기 위해서나 수준높은 교양인이 되기 위해서가 아니다.

자신이 막연하게 옳다고 생각하는 부분이라던지 뭔가 어떠한 포부가 내안에서 꿈틀대고는 있지만 그것을 구체적으로 형상화 시킬수가 없을때 책을 읽으면서 역사속 훌륭한 사상가들이나 위인들로부터 내 안의 소중한 무언가가 공감받고 증명받게 되면 내 존재가치에 대해서 자부심을 갖게 되고 막연했던 내안의 잠재력들이 구체화되어갈때 엄청난 희열을 느끼게 된다.

자신의 뜻을 실현시키기 위해서는 자기만의 뜻과 의지만으로는 불가능하다.

그것은 기존 지식들의 도움을 받아 그것을 실현시킬 구체적 방법들을 찾아야하며 자신안에만 있던 나만의 막연한 무엇이 실현가능한 구체적인 것으로 되어갈때 삶의 의지가 증폭된다.

사람이 나이가 들면서 어릴적 꿈과 이상이 현실에 막혀 사라져버리는것은 그것을 실현시킬 방법을 찾지 못해서이다.

진정한 자기자신을 구체화시키지 못하고 그것을 현실의 삶에서 발현시킬 방법을 찾지 못하면 그냥 그럭저럭 원초적인 욕구만 대충 만족시키며 살면서 인생 갈팡질팡 살다 가는것이다. 그렇게 살수밖에는 없다.

내가 품은 이상을 실현시킬 방법을 모르니 현실과의 갭이 너무나도 큰것처럼 느껴져 고통스럽기 때문이다.

그렇게 진정한 자기자신의 본질을 외면하고 등돌린채 그저그런것에 만족하는걸로 자신을 위안삼을수 밖에 없게된다.

확신하건데 사람은 누구나 자기만의 소명이 반드시 있다고 생각한다.

공부를 안하면 내안에 무엇이 들어있는지 내 안에 어떠한 힘들이 존재하는지 알수가 없다.

공부를 해서 지식을 많이 쌓아야만 내 안의 숨겨진 보물들을 찾을 수 있고 사람들과의 상호작용으로 그것들이 다듬어지면서 지식들이 정교해진다.

그러다보면 내가 의도하지 않아도 어느새 공익을 위하고 이타적인 삶을 살아가는 사람이 되어가는 것이다.

선은 반드시 악을 이긴다?

웃기는 소리.

선은 절대 악을 다루지 못한다.
반면 악은 선을 다룰수도 있다.

상대를 다룰수 있는 힘(권력)이란 ‘생사여탈권’에서 비롯되는 것인데, 상대를 꺾어 죽일수도 있는 힘을 가져야만이 그 힘이 완성된다.

니체는 『도덕의 계보』에서 “무력한 것은 가장 사악한 것이다"라고 말했다. 선(善)을 강조하지만 무력한 사람에서 태어난 증오는 기이하고 섬뜩한것, 정신적으로 가장 독이 있는 것으로 성장한다고 했다.

현실에 대한 자신의 무력감이 극대화될때 우울증적 광기가 생겨난다. ‘선은 반드시 악을 이긴다’는 관념앞에서 자신의 선함이 아무 힘도 쓸수 없다는 무력감에 직면하게 되면 그 선함은 그 어떤 악보다 강한 증오를 품게 된다.

그래서 어쩌면 궁극의 선을 주장하는 종교가 많은 사람들을 증오의 학살로 내모는 전쟁으로 이끌게 되는 것인지 모른다. 역사이래 많은 피를 흘리게 한 종교전쟁은 각자의 선을 주장하는 정의의 투쟁이겠지만 그래봤자 결국 많은 사람들을 증오에 빠트리고 서로 죽이는 최대의 악을 낳을 뿐 아닌가.

이처럼 선함이 (타인의것이든 자신의것이든) 그 악을 다루지 못하고 무력해지게 되면 그 무력감에서 양태시킨 증오로 결국 그 스스로를 자멸시키게 된다. 무력감의 증오가 자라나는 순간 결국 선은 악에 굴복된 것이다.

악은 선 그 자체의 고결함은 결코 파괴시킬수 없지만, 선을 다루는 사람 그 스스로 자신을 자멸하게 만들어버릴수 있기 때문에 그러한 의미에서 악은 선을 다룰수 있게 되는것이다.

이러한 과정의 역사속에서 악은 세상을 지배하게 된 것이고, 선에 대한 비관론이 퍼져나가게 된 것이다.

이처럼 악은 무엇인가를 죽이는 힘이기에 선을 죽일수도 있는 반면, 선은 무엇인가를 죽이는 힘이 아니기 때문에 악을 절대 제거할수가 없다.

선이 할 수 있는 일이라고는 단지 악을 교화시켜 선으로 이끄는 것 뿐이다. 그러기 위해서는 선을 다루는 사람이 악에 대응 할때 그 스스로 악에대한 증오심으로 선함을 놓아버리고 자멸하지 않아야 비로소 악을 교화시켜낼 수 있는 힘을 갖추게 된다.

진정한 힘을 갖추고자하는 권력자는 권력의 본질인 생사여탈권을 쥐고 흔들수 있어야 하고, 이는 사람을 살리고 성장시키는 생(生)의 에너지인 선의 힘과 사람을 죽이고 굴복시키는 사死의 에너지인 악의 힘을 동시에 갖출수 있어야 한다.

어느 한쪽으로 치우쳐진 힘은 균형을 잃고 스스로 자멸하고 말것이다. 선의 힘에 치우친다면 모든이에게 사랑받고 성장시킬수는 있지만 두려움에 떨게 하지못하여 자신을 따르지 않는 사람들을 다스리지 못할 것이다. 악의 힘에 치우친다면 사람들로부터 두려움에 떨게 하고 복종시킬 힘은 갖게 되겠지만 사람들을 성장시키고 좋은길로 이끌수 없게 된다.

이러한 선악의 힘을 동시에 갖추면서 그 무엇에도 지배되지 않으려면 그 스스로 선악에 대한 분별심에서 초탈해야 되며 공공의 이익과 사람들을 위해서라면서 기꺼이 악의 수단을 사용할 수 있을 정도로 완전히 자신을 내려놓을수 있어야 한다.

마키아벨리즘이 사상적으로 훌륭한 부분은 선악 둘중 어느 한 편에 서서 그것을 옹호하는 이론을 펼친 것이 아니라 선악을 도덕적인 관념에서 분리시켜 그것을 단지 수단적인 도구로서만 바라보게 한 점에 있다.

선악을 도덕적인 것이 아닌 도구적인 수단으로만 바라보게 되면 선악 그 무엇에도 시비분별을 일으키지 않게 되고, 그로인해 니체가 지적한대로 악에 대한 증오심으로 ‘선을 강조하는 자의 기이하고 독이있는 증오심’ 같은 것에 물들지 않을수 있게 해준다.

세상의 전쟁은 자신을 선으로 여기고 상대를 악으로 규정지어 그러한 시비분별심에 따른 증오심에서 비롯된 것이 대부분이므로 그러한 선악론에서 벗어나 그야말로 선악의 저편에서 세상을 지극히 냉철하게 바라볼수 있게 해주는 것이 마키아벨리즘의 진정한 힘이 아닌가 생각된다.

마키아벨리의 『군주론』(1532년)은 메디치가의 로렌초 2세(우르비노의 공작)에게 바쳐졌지만 병으로 요절하여 관심을 받지 못한채 당시 마키아벨리는 출세하지 못하고 성벽공사 관리하는 하급공무원으로 살다 생을 마감하게 된다.

여러가지 카더라에 의하면 마키아벨리는 『로마사 논고』에서 피력한대로 고전적 공화주의자였지만 출세에 눈이 멀어 당시 권력을 쟁취한 메디치가에 의해 등용되기 위해 공화주의적인 소신을 버리고 『군주론』을 써서 군주정에 아부한 것이라는 이야기들이 있다.

마키아벨리는 자신에 대해서 “나는 내 자신보다 조국을 더 사랑한다"라는 애국심을 말한적이 있는데, 그것이 진심이라 한다면 『군주론』이 단순히 출세만을 위해 쓴 책이라고 생각하지 않는다.

마키아벨리가 『군주론』을 쓸 당시의 시대상황이 군주정을 몰아내고 다수의 지배체제로 바뀌었지만 독재로 이어져 민주정이 해체되면서 다시 또 군주정이 복귀되게 된 시점이었다.

마키아벨리는 고전적 공화주의자라 불릴만큼 시민의 자유와 행복을 위해서라면 공화주의가 가장 나은 제도라고 주장했지만 다수가 지배하는 체제가 허무하게 무너지고 다시 군주정이 복귀되면서 이왕 군주제를 할꺼라면 군주가 어떠한 식으로 권력을 다스려야 시민의 자유와 안전을 위하는 군주가 될수 있는지를 현실적인 시대 흐름상황에서 쓴 것이라 생각된다.

칸트의 『영구평화론』에서도 나온것처럼 정부형태가 군주정인지 민주정인지 이런것이 중요한것이 아니라 그 모든 정부형태가 독재정으로 흐를 가능성이 있기 때문에 중요한것은 공화주의적이냐 아니냐가 중요한 것이라는 시각이 있듯이 마키아벨리도 공화주의를 배신하고 군주정을 옹호한것으로 보이기보다는 현실적인 시대흐름상 군주정이 독재가 되지 않고 국가와 시민을 위한 군주로 나아갈 방향을 피력한 것으로 봐야 되는것이 아닌가 생각된다.

더구나 『군주론』의 내용자체가 군주가 가오잡은 내용들이 아니라 국가의 안위를 지키고 시민들의 자유와 안전을 위해 군주는 때에 따라서 잔인해질수도 비열할수도 있어야 한다고 주장하는 내용으로 봐서는 군주의 이미지가 망가지고 욕먹을 수도 있는 내용을 말하는 마키아벨리즘이 군주에게 단지 아부하기 위해 쓰여진 것이라 생각되지 않는다.

마키아벨리는 도덕적인 행위로 공익을 얻을 수 있다면 더할나위 없이 좋겠지만 현실은 기만으로 가득차 있기 때문에 그런 악행과 기만이 점철되는 현실속에서 권력을 잡아 시민들을 지켜내고 국가를 지키기 위해서라면 군주 자신은 기꺼이 기만적 행위도 할 수 있어야 한다는 것이다.

이러한 부분때문에 마키아벨리즘이 ‘수단과 방법을 가리지 않는’ 현실주의 정치학의 상징이 되었지만, 그러한 수단이 군주 사적이익을 위해 이기적으로 행동하는것을 말한 것이 아니라 공공의 이익이라는 좋은결과가 나타나지 않는 수단은 그것이 선이든 악이든 다 쓸모없다는 것이다.

이러한 마키아벨리즘은 공적으로 더 좋은결과를 낳기위한 불가피한것으로 때로는 악의 수단을 기꺼이 사용하여 선의 결과를 낳는 것을 말하는 것인데, 이것은 권력자가 자신의 도덕적 명망에 집착하지않을 배포와 사심없는 깨끗하고 고결한 마음씨가 없다면 불가능한 것이다.

마키아벨리의 『군주론』에서 지적하는 내용은 국가가 불안정하거나 신생국가의 경우에 한하여 강력한 중앙집권적 리더십이 필요한 경우를 말하는 것이고, 『로마사 논고』에서 주장하는 공화주의 내용은 국가가 안정되고 선한 덕이 통용되는 세상에서 필요한 내용들을 이야기 하고 있다.

다시말해 마키아벨리즘은 단순한 권모술수만을 말하고 있는 것이 아니라 건국시에나 국가의 위기상황에서는 군주(강력한 중앙집권)의 통치력과 카리스마가 발휘되어 공익을 증진시킬수 있도록 수단과 방법을 가리지않고 지극히 계산적이고 합리적으로 움직일수 있어야 함을 강조하며, 국가가 안정되었을때에는 공화정을 통한 사회적 합의를 중요하게 여기는것으로 보는것이 마키아벨리즘을 가장 적합하게 설명한 것이라 본다. 그 모든 것의 최종 목적은 권력자 자신을 위한 것이 아니라 국가의 방위와 시민의 자유를 위한 것이다.

군주론이 왜 하필 메디치가에게 전해졌냐에 대해서는 여러썰이 많지만 아마도 그당시 메디치가가 정치, 경제, 학문, 예술 다방면에서 전폭적인 지원을 하던 가문이기도 했고, 그렇기에 자신의 사상을 알아봐줬으면 하는 마음과 당시 시대흐름상 군주정으로 복귀하는데 메디치가가 권력을 잡음에 따라 군주제를 바르게 이끌어 갈 것에 대한 염원을 전달한 것이라 생각된다.

비록 군주론을 헌정받은 메디치가의 로렌초 2세(우르비노 공작)는 젊은 나이에 병으로 요절해서 마키아벨리즘이 쓰이지 못했지만, 로렌초 2세의 딸 카테리나는 프랑스에 정략결혼으로 조국을 떠나면서 메디치 가문이 소장하고 있던 마키아벨리의 군주론 하나만을 품고 가서 프랑스를 완전히 접수해버리고 16세기 후반의 프랑스와 유럽을 뒤흔들면서 마키아벨리즘을 실현시켜낸다.

고대 스파르타 입법자들도 이처럼 국법을 만들때 일부러 대립적 요소들을 덧붙여 시민들의 덕을 이끌어 내고자 했다.

투쟁없이 이루어진 성공은 헛된것이며, 그것들은 아무런 가치가 없기 때문이다.

견제와 균형의 원리란 너가 있으니 내가 있는것에 관한것.

이런 사상은 호메로스때부터 이어져왔다. 아킬레우스와 오디세우스가 말다툼하는 것을보고 아가멤논이 기뻐했듯이 영향력을 지닌 사람들의 경쟁과 대립은 나라의 큰 이익이 된다.

인간의 이기심이 인간의 본성인 한 도덕과 정치 사이의 갈등은 계속 존속할 것이고 또 그러한 갈등이 존속되어도 좋다. 왜냐하면 그 갈등은 인간의 덕을 갈고 닦는 숫돌의 소임을 하기 때문이다.

헤라클레이토스, 클라우제비츠, 헤겔은 갈등적 상황을 부정적으로 보지 않았다. 칸트 역시 갈등상황이란 인간들의 모든 소질을 개발시키기 위해 인간을 대립시키게 되는 것이라고 말한다.

물론 상대 그 자체를 파괴하기 위해 존재하는 갈등은 최고의 악이다. 적대감과 갈등도 지나치게 되면 너무도 위험하고 파괴적인 영향을 사회에 끼치게 되므로 갈등의 에너지를 적절하게 활용할수 있어야 한다.

갈등은 인간 문명의 발전의 방해되는 최악의 요소로 작용하기도 하지만 그러한 최악을 방지하기 위해 인간은 상호대립을 넘어서서 공존과 평형의 법칙을 발견하게 되고, 공적인 평화를 위한 성숙한 의식을 각자가 성숙시키게 된다.

인간의 운명은 항상 순수하고 선함만을 간직하도록 허락하지 않는다. 인간의 삶은 매순간 선과 악에 뒤섞여 자아를 풍요롭게 성장시킬 기회를 주는데, 그 과정에서 얼마나 선하고 착한가보다 더 중요한 것은 무엇이 정의롭고 유용한 것인지 무엇이 정의롭지 못하며 쓸모없는 것인지를 구별할 줄 아는 능력이다.

즉 얼마나 분별력을 갖추고 있느냐 이것이 중요한 것이다.

일생에서 단한번도 갈등없이 평온한 삶을 살았다는 것은 그 자체로 훌륭한 성품의 증거일수도 있지만 한편으로는 삶의 문제들에 적극적으로 뛰어들지 않은 채 회피하며 살아왔다는 뜻일 수도 있다.

상대방과의 시비분별의 갈등과 번민속에서 솔직하게 드러나는 자신을 직면해보지 않은 사람은 자기자신을 제대로 알지 못한다. 자신을 제대로 알지 못하기에 무엇을 고쳐나가고 인내하고 성장시켜야 할지도 알수 없다.

사람이란 앞으로 어떤 일을 당할지 모르기 때문에 당장 눈앞에 순간적으로 보이는 단편적인 것만으로 위대하다 비참하다 섣불리 판단할 수 없다.

중요한 것은 바른 분별심을 지니고 나아가는 방향성이며 끝내 선한 방향으로 자신을 고쳐 나아가는 용기속에서 인간은 위대해지고 문명에 이로운것들이 탄생되는 것이다.

높은 이상과 냉철한 지식 그리고 선량한 지혜가 만인의 모범이 될 정도로 훌륭한 사람인데, 정작 행동하는 것을 보면 실망스러운 경우가 있다.

이런 경우는 크게 두가지 원인에서 비롯되는데, 하나는 자신이 쌓은 지식이 행동으로 실천이 바르게 이어지지 않은 이유이고, 다른 하나는 부귀영화를 즐기는데 빠져 눈과 귀가 어두어져서 그렇다.

세상의 부귀영화를 다 쟁취하고서도 역사에 길이 남은 영웅들의 공통점은 바로 자신의 육신에 만족을 주지 않은 채 평생을 절제와 인내속에서 스스로를 바로 세우려고 무진장 애를 썼다는 사실이다.

플루타르코스는 사람이 마땅히 지키고 행해야 할 도의(도덕적 의리)의 염원을 일으켜 세우고자 이 영웅전을 썼다고 한다.

역사속의 의로운 사람이 한 때 그 시대상황으로 인해 패배했어도 천년뒤에 인류가 갈구하는 정조(情操)속에서 영원히 살아남는 영웅으로 인정받게 되는 것은 인간본능이 언제나 세상을 바르게 이끌어가는 것을 간절히 염원하는 바람에 의한 것인지 모른다.

플루타르코스에게 있어서 영웅이란 최고의 도덕관념의 표현이다. 정의를 위해서 자신의 운명과 맞서 싸우는 것이 진정한 영웅이라 정의내리며 그러한 영웅들의 정신을 담아냈다.

<플루타르코스 영웅전>에서 나타난 영웅들의 지혜와 통찰력의 힘은 그들의 엄청난 인내심, 규율적인 생활, 사치와 낭비를 경계하고 음식마저 거칠고 단촐한 것을 일부러 찾아먹는 등의 자신의 육신을 만족시키는 부귀에 빠져들지 않은채 정신적인 자기수양의 과정을 초지일관으로 지속시켜내는 힘에서 비롯된 것이었다.

지식인들이나 권력자들이 스스로 자족하고 만사를 절제할수 있어야 하는 이유는 일반대중들이 보기에 좋은 이미지를 얻기 위함이 아니다. 그러한 금욕적 절제와 인내를 통해 내 자아(욕구)의 절멸상태에서만이 보편타당한 지혜와 통찰력이 사라지지 않기 때문이다.

최고의 진리를 찾으려는 종교수행자들이 금욕적인 삶을 중시하고 계율을 지키려 애쓰는 것도 다 그러한 이유에서다.

사적 욕망과 사적인 마음으로부터 초탈하여 그 무엇에도 걸림이 없는 자유자재한 마음을 지닐 수 있어야 그 명철한 통찰력이 유지가 된다.

한 때 아무리 좋은 마음과 높은 이상으로 공익을 위한 삶을 살아가고자 했더라도 그 가는길에 사심이 생겨나고 보신하려는 마음하나 일어난다면 그 사리분별 명확했던 통찰력과 지혜는 한 순간에 사라지고 말것이다.

특히 부귀를 오래 보존하고 싶은 명예욕 때문에 대중의 눈치를 보기 시작하면 사리분별 능력은 곧 사라지고 만다. 냉철한 이성과 바른 소신을 유지하려면 대중에게 좋은 이미지로 보여지는 것에 대해 초탈해야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 소심해지고 용기는 사라지며 모든일에 쩔쩔매게 된다. 좋은 이미지를 유지하고 좋은 칭찬만 들으려는 마음을 버릴수 있어야 본연의 예리한 이성이 나온다.

세상의 그 어떤 부귀영화에 비교할 수 없을 정도로 귀한 것이 지혜와 통찰력이다. 부귀영화는 그 정해진 힘만큼만 세상을 이롭게 하는 수단이지만 지혜와 통찰력은 그 영향력의 한도가 정해져 있지 않고 무한한 힘을 발휘할 수 있다.

인간의 짧은 일생의 부귀영화를 누리고 싶은 육신의 욕구 하나 때문에 영구히 길이남을 통찰력이라는 귀한 힘이 한순간에 사라진다면 너무나 아까운일이 아닌가?

‘최대다수의 최대행복’이라는 벤담의 양적 공리주의는 다수의 이익을 위해서라면 소수의 이익은 희생되어도 좋다는 사상으로 이어졌고, 이는 스탈린, 모택동의 공산주의 혁명을 위해 수억명의 인민은 기꺼이 희생시켜도 좋다는 집단주의(전체주의)로 빠지게 된다. 이는 또 다시 개인의 이익보다는 국가권력을 중시하는 국가주의와 그 개념이 뒤섞이고, 국가주의는 공동체주의와 그 경계가 모호하게 쓰여지면서 공동체주의의 긍정적 요소(화합)를 공유하고 있는 공화주의 개념과 혼용시키며 그 정의를 완전히 어지럽히고 있다.

공화주의는 대중독재로 나아갈 위험이 있는 집단주의(전체주의)와는 완전히 다른것이며, 개인의 자유를 존중하고 개개인의 가치를 중시하기 때문에 서로 다른 개인들이 더불어 살아갈수 있게 하는 시스템을 만드는것이 공화주의의 핵심이다. 그렇기 때문에 공화주의는 자유주의 사상과 공존할수 있고 개인주의 사상과도 공존할수 있는 사상이다.

국가에서 제도화 시킨 공화주의적 요소가 바른 공화주의인지 아니면 공화주의의 탈을 쓴 가짜인지를 구별하기 위해서는 그 제도들이 나와 다른 사람들간의 공존을 위해 견제와 균형을 추구하려는 시스템이냐 아니면 한쪽만 힘이 커지거나 혹은 억압하거나 무시하는 시스템이냐로 나누어 생각해보면 그 진위를 구별해낼 수 있다고 본다.

칸트는 국가내에서 뿐만 아니라 국가간의 평화를 위해서도 이러한 공화주의적 가치를 존속시키는 국가들이 늘어나는것을 중요하게 생각하고 있으며, 그러한 국가들끼리 서로 연합하여야 영구적인 세계평화로 이어질수 있다고 주장하고 있다. 공화주의적 가치를 보존하는 국가들은 다른나라의 주권을 인정하고 존중하며 그들과 공존하기 위한 노력을 하게 될 것이기 때문이다.

물론 이런 공화주의적인 공존의 성품은 인간의 이기적 본성을 상당한 노력으로 극복해야하는 어려운 것이다. 비록 진심으로 상대와의 공존을 추구하려는 마음이 들지 않더라도 정치체제가 서로의 이기적 성향의 힘을 반대적으로 작용하여 균형을 이루게 하는 시스템으로 구축시킬수 있다면 어떤 한 정파의 이기성이 극대화되어 평화를 깨뜨리려는 시도에도 공화주의적 시스템이 그 한쪽의 파괴력을 완화시키거나 차단시킬수 있게된다.

이렇듯 자신의 이기적 본성을 스스로 다스리지 못할지라도 상대편의 힘으로 자신이 언제든 제어당할수있는 시스템이 작동되고 있다는것을 인지할수 있게만 하여도 인간은 억지로라도 자신의 이기심을 누르고 부득불 공명정대하게 처신하기 위해 좋은시민이 되려는 노력을 하지 않을수 없게 된다.

이러한 시스템이 되도록 하는 것이 공화주의이며 이것은 정부형태가 어떠한 것이든 간에 독재성을 숨기고 국민을 속이려드는 이기적 권력자를 막아낼수 있는 형태이다.

원칙이란 자신의 삶을 지지하는 뼈대이자 추구하는 지향점이기 때문이다.

그래서 우리는 어떠한 상황에서도 자신의 원칙을 끝까지 고수하는 사람들을 올바른 사람이라고 부른다.

프로타고라스가 “인간은 만물의 척도"라고 한것은 사람은 제각기 만물의 척도이며 사람들의 의견이 다를때 한 사람이 옳고 다른사람은 그르게 되는 객관적 진리는 존재하지 않는다는 말이다. 개개인의 원칙들이 다 다를수 있기 때문에 인간은 자신만의 원칙을 세워 그것을 준수한다면 그 자체로 옳은 사람이다.

그러나, 문제는 여기서 시작된다.

인간의 삶은 나 혼자 사는 것이 아니기 때문이다.

인간은 가지각색의 사람들과 더불어 살아가기 때문에 각자의 원칙이 부딧쳐서 충돌하게 된다. 프로타고라스는 객관적 절대적 진리라는것을 인정하지 않았고 오직 개개인의 감각적 척도만을 중시했기 때문에 이런 기준으로 사회를 살아가게 된다면 각종 원칙들이 뒤죽박죽 충돌하게 될 때 사람들은 무엇을 진짜 믿어야 할지 개인 혼자는 결정할수 없으므로 다수가 결정하게 되는 흐름으로 전개된다.(버트런트 러셀 <서양철학사>프로타고라스 편)

굳이 사회속 다양한 원칙들의 충돌을 예로 들지 않고도 자신의 생활만 돌이켜봐도 알수있다.

사람은 자신의 인생을 잘 살아가기 위한 자기만의 원칙들을 세우고 그것을 지키려 노력하는데 예를 들면 “나는 반드시 몇시간 이상씩 무엇을 하는사람이다"는 원칙을 세우고 “나는 어떠한 상황에서도 이런 사람이다"고 스스로를 단정하고있을때 그것을 어떠한 상황에서도 무조건 지키는 사람은 단순히 생각하면 원칙을 지키는 삶을 사는 훌륭한 사람이다.

그러나 그 원칙을 지키는데만 집착하여 내 생활의 다른 부분이 붕괴되고 있다면 과연 그 원칙을 지키는 삶이 훌륭한 것이라 할 수 있을까?

원칙이 번복될수 있다는 것은 삶의 균형이 그 어떤 원칙 하나 때문에 깨어져 원칙을 고수하지않을때보다 더 나쁜 쪽으로 나아가게 되는 경우를 막기 위함이다.

어떠한 상황에도 원칙을 지키는 것이 훌륭한 것이 될 수 있는 조건은 그 원칙이 삶의 다른 부분을 해치지 않고 자신의 삶을 더 바르고 좋은쪽으로 이끌어주는 힘이 되었을때 한정되는 것이지 “원칙을 지키는것이 무조건 옳다"라는 말에만 빠져 다른 것들을 두루 살피지 못하는 것은 그건 그냥 원칙을 지켜 삶을 이롭게 만들어 나가는 것이 아닌 “원칙을 지키는 사람"이라는 겉치레에 집착해 다른 것들을 파괴시키는 사람일 뿐이다.

원칙은 분명 준수 되어야 한다. 하지만 다양한 원칙들이 충돌되고 서로를 파괴시키고 있을때에는 내가 지키고자 하는 원칙이 다른 것들과의 균형을 깨고 있는것은 아닌지 한번쯤은 돌이켜 생각해볼 수 있어야 한다.

동서양을 막론하고 모든 사상가들이 궁극의 지향점으로 끝을 내는 부분은 바로 “중용"이다. 그만큼 삶의 균형을 찾고 사회의 균형을 찾는 융통성을 중요하게 다루고 있다.

프로타고라스 역시 객관적 진리를 거부하고 인간 개개인의 척도만을 중시하였더라도 사회의 법과 관습, 전통적 도덕은 인정한 이유는 그러한 것들이 개인적인 척도들의 갈등과정 속에서 끝끝내 균형을 이루어 사회에 뿌리내린 것들이기 때문이다.

원칙을 지키는 사람이 무조건 훌륭하다 단정지을수 없다.

융통성 없이 조화를 이루지 못하는 어리석고 편협적인 사람일수 있다.

동시에 융통성을 잘 부리는 사람이 항상 훌륭한 것도 아니다.

원칙을 어기는 삶을 살기 위해 융통성이란 변칙뒤에 숨고자 하는 것일 수도 있기 때문이다.

자신이 원칙과 융통성 중 어떠한 경계에 있고 또한 어떠한 마음가짐으로 원칙과 융통성을 추구해 나가는지는 자신의 양심만이 알수 있을 뿐이고, 겉으로 보여지는 방편적인 모습에 저 사람은 훌륭하다 나쁘다 단정지을수는 없다.

더욱이 남이 나를 어떻게 봐줬으면 좋겠다는 겉치레에 집착해 원칙과 융통성 어느한쪽에 집착하여 고집하는것은 원칙과 융통성 그 어떤것도 진실로 추구하는 사람이라 할 수 없다.

분별력 없이 어느 한쪽만 고집하게 되면 주변사람들이 골치아파진다.

원칙과 융통성의 문제는 결국 분별력을 어떻게 갖추어 나가냐의 문제로 이어진다.

세상에는 논쟁의 상대를 무조건 이기기 위한 목적으로 논리를 조작하는 사람들이 있다. 그들을 상대하기 위한 글이다.

절대 깰수 없는 논리구조가 있다.

첫째, 선험적 지식.
둘째, 논리적으로 아직 깨지지 않은 지식.
셋째, 소피스트 역설의 무한 도돌이표의 늪.

첫째, <1+1=2이다>와 같은 선험적 보편적 진리의 경우이다. 이것은 논쟁할 필요도 없는 절대적 진리로써 인간의 인식 능력과 상관없이 그 명제 자체로 절대적 참임을 판단할 수 있는 명제이다. 이런 선험적 명제는 논쟁의 분파에서는 아예 다루지를 않는다. 너무나 당연한 진리라 묻고 따질 필요도 없이 그냥 존재 자체가 참인 대상들이다.

둘째, 논리구조를 기반으로 하여 학문적 과학적 진보를 이끌어내는 명제들이다. 이런 구조는 현재까지는 깨지지 않았지만 그 자체의 논리구조가 있기 때문에 언젠가는 깨어질 가능성을 내포한다. 학문의 발전은 기존의 보편타당하고 절대불변하리라 여겼던 전제들이 더이상 유의미하지 않는것임을 밝혀내는 일이다. 대부분의 논쟁들은 이러한 구조에 의해서 진행되는 것이며, 선험적 명제 즉, (1+1=2) 같은 묻고 따지기도 전에 무조건 참인 대상들을 제외한 모든 명제들이 그 대상이 된다.

뉴턴의 절대적 시간과 공간은 아이슈타인의 상대성 이론의 시공간으로 깨어졌다. 아이슈타인은 현재까지는 깨어지지 않았지만 만약 누군가가 상대성 이론에 담긴 논리구조를 깨어 다른 경우가 있을수 있음을 증명해 내면 상대성 이론의 절대성은 깨어지게 된다.

그래서 논쟁의 기본은 상대의 논리구조를 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 상대가 어떤 예시를 들어 “전제(P)“로 삼아 ㅡ>자신이 주장하고 싶은 “결론(Q)“을 이끌어 냈다면 이것을 깨는 방법은 상대가 예시로 든 전제를 적용했는데도 똑같은 결론이 나오지 않음을 지적을 하면 상대의 논리는 깨지게 된다. 바로 이것이 후건부정이 참임을 증명하여 상대의 논리를 깨는 방식이다.

Not Q> 이다는 것을 밝혀내면 논파된다. 상대가 주장한 전제는 그대로 살려두는 것이 핵심이다.

칼포퍼는 이러한 반증에 입각한 과학적 방법론만이 학문적 가치가 있음을 주장하였고, 사이비이론(그럴싸해보이지만 사실 사기치는것)들은 바로 반증가능하지 않다는 점에서 과학과 구별된다는 입장을 제시한다.

이에 제자 에우아틀로스는 “결코 수업료를 주지 않을것입니다. 제가 재판에서 이긴다면 당연히 판결에 따라 수업료를 줄수 없고, 만약 제가 진다면 스승님의 실력이 없는 증거이므로 계약에 따라 수업료를 줄 수 없습니다.”

제논의 역설

“아킬레우스는 거북이를 영원히 따라잡을수 없다"는 역설이다.

아킬레우스는 세상에서 가장 발이 빠른 자이기 때문에 절대적으로 불리한 거북은 아킬레스보다 훨씬 앞에서 달리기로 한다는 조건이 마련되었다. 제논에 따르면 아킬레스가 거북의 출발선에 다다를때면 거북은 다시 아킬레스보다 (처음조건대로) 앞에서 달리게 되고 이것이 무한정 반복되기 때문에 아킬레스는 영원히 거북이를 이길수 없다는 것이다.

이런 수법들은 논쟁을 하는 사람들끼리도 그것이 잘못된 논쟁임을 인지를 한다. 이렇듯 억지적인 잘못된 결론을 이끌어 내지만 그 과정은 논리적으로 보이기 때문에 그 잘못된 결론을 깨지 못하는것처럼 보이는 속임수에 그 맹점이 있다.

이런 유형의 명제들이 사회악을 일으키는 이유는 이성적이고 논리적인 사고를 통해 논리적인 결론을 이끌어 내야 하는데, 논리적인 사고를 통한 결론이 잘못된 결론으로 빠져버리게 만들어 이성적 추론을 하려는 모든 시도를 혼돈에 빠뜨리는 이성과 논리를 조롱하는 행위이기 때문이다.

고대철학자들은 이러한 소피스트들의 역설이 사람들의 이성을 흐리게 만든다는 것을 깨달았다. 이러한 유형들을 상대하는 길은 이런것이 논리적 이성을 붕괴시키는 제논의 역설의 형태임을 지적해야 하고, 이것을 붕괴시키려면 그 대상을 뒤집어 적용했을때에도 어차피 똑같은 결론이 나오는 무의미한 도돌이표임을 보여주는것이다.

이러한 수수께끼식의 도돌이표 명제가 절대 깨지지 않는 것은 그 명제의 논리가 완벽하기 때문이 아니라 논리적 추론으로 명제를 풀려고하면 이상한 결론이 나오는 형태이기 때문이다.

이런 경험을 통해 느끼는 바는 이러한 역설의 상태를 비판할때는 논리로 해결하려고 하지말고(논리로 풀게되면 비논리적인 이상한 결론의 늪으로 빠지게됨) 재치나 위트같은 기지를 갖추어 대응해야 한다는 것이고, 재치나 위트는 논리에 집착하지 않는 생각의 유연성에 달려있다는 것이다.

정치질서가 위태로울 때에는 역사를 되돌아 보는 것이 서구의 오랜 전통이다. 유럽의 역사는 민주주의에 있어서 중대한 세번의 결정적인 시기를 경험했다. 1918년 제1차 세계대전 이후, 1945년 제2차 세계대전 이후, 그리고 1989년 공산주의 종말 이후. 이 결정적인 시기들에 수립된 많은 민주주의 체제가 실패로 끝나고 말았다.

1920년대와 1930년대를 거치면서 1922년 수립된 소련 공산주의 정권은 1940년대에 유럽으로 자신의 모델을 전파했다. 파시즘과 공산주의는 둘다 민주주의의 무력함에 대한 응답이었다.

우리는 민주주의 유산이 자동적으로 그러한 위협으로부터 지켜줄꺼라 생각하기 쉽다. 그러나 이는 잘못된 생각이다. 역사를 연구하여 폭정의 뿌리깊은 근원을 이해한 다음 여기에 적절히 대처할 방법을 심사숙고 해야 한다. 우리는 20세기에 민주주의가 파시즘과 나치즘, 공산주의에 굴복하는 것을 보았던 유럽인들보다 결코 더 현명하지 않다.

미국 건국의 아버지들이 쓴 <페더럴리스트 페이퍼>에 담긴 가치는 인간의 이성은 완벽할 수 없기때문에 견제와 균형을 깨트리지않는데 있었다. 그들은 자신이 권력을 쟁취한 때에도 자신의 판단력이 틀릴수 있음을 경계하였고, 자신이 민주주의를 위협하고 오판할 가능성을 항상 염두하여 그 스스로를 경계하였다.

민주주의는 “국민이 곧 주인” 이라는 말 자체에 담긴 절대성 때문에 이기적인 소수 몇몇이 국민들 다수를 선동하여 대중독재로 나아간다 해도 그들을 막을 방법이 없다.

다수결의 논리는 아무도 비판할 수 없는 절대적으로 옳은 가치로 받아들여 다수의 횡포가 이루어진다해도 사람들은 그것에 대해 무엇이 잘못된 것인지 근원적으로 따져볼 생각을 하지 않는다. 그래서 민주주의가 공산주의나 나치즘 파시즘의 대중조작에 속아넘어갈수 밖에 없었던 것이다.

티머시 스나이더는 이 책에서 폭정으로 이어질 수 있는 신호들을 지적하고 그것을 막기 위해 어떠한 점을 조심해야 하는지를 20가지로 나누어 제시한다.

스나이더가 제시한 내용의 핵심은 세상에 대해 자기 스스로의 힘으로 판단하여 누군가에게 선동되거나 속지 않을 것을 중시하고 있으며, 자신이 옳다고 생각하는 바에 대하여 행동하고, 옳지 않다고 생각하는 것에 대해서는 거부할 수 있는 용기를 갖춰야 한다고 주장한다.

더욱이 비열한 통치자일수록 우리를 마음대로 다루기 위해 덫을 치고 걸려들게 만들기 때문에 항상 바른 마음 바른 자세로 그 어떤 덫과 유혹에도 걸려들지 않도록 해야 한다고 말한다.

현대의 폭정은 테러 경영으로 이루어지기 때문에 갑작스럽게 닥친 재앙이 견제와 균형을 끝장내고 표현의 자유와 공정한 재판의 권리를 중단시키는것이 아닌지 경계해야 한다고 주장한다.

민주주의는 저절로 우리를 지켜주는 제도가 아니다. 우리가 스스로의 힘으로 획득한 명철한 이성과 지성을 가지고 용기를 내며 몸소 지켜내야만 민주주의가 존속되는것이다. 비겁한 마음을 버리지 못하면 폭정에 먹혀버릴것이고 오늘 내가 누리는 자유는 마지막이 될수도 있다.

그래서 자유민주주의 시민으로 살아간다는건 진실과 자유를 위해서 최대한 용기를 내며 살아가야하는 사람들이다.
