로크는 『인간오성론』에서 인간이 선천적으로 타고난 지성을 부정했다.

‘모든 인간은 백지상태에서 태어났다’ 라고 주장하며 그렇기 때문에 오직 경험에 의해서만 모든 지식과 외부의 실재에 대해 이해할 수 있게 된다고 말한다.

“정신을 아무 특성도 관념도 없는 하얀 종이라고 가정해보자.
이 하얀 종이 위에 어떻게 글씨가 쓰이는가?
이성과 지식의 재료는 어디에서 얻는가?
바로 경험에서 온다.
모든 지식은 경험에 기초하여 궁극적으로 경험에서 모든 지식이 도출되기 마련이다.”

모든 사람이 백지상태의 정신을 가지고 세상에 태어난다면 어느 누구도 다른 사람보다 더 우월하게 태어나지는 않을 것이다. 따라서 개인에 대한 모든 것은 어떻게 교육받는지와 관련된다.

그 당시 지성이나 진리에 대한 기존 관념은 플라톤, 데카르트, 스콜라 철학자들에 의해 지배되었던 불변의 선험적 진리라는 것이 존재한다는 관념이 지배적이었다.

그러나 로크는 『인간오성론』을 통해 그러한 관념에 반대하면서 선험적 진리나 원칙은 없다는 논증을 펼쳐나간다.

지식이나 진리가 전적으로 개개인의 지각에 의존한다는 선언은 그 당시에는 가히 새롭고 혁명적인 학설이었다. 로크의 학설은 “타불라 라사(tabula rasa: 빈 서판)이론"이라는 별칭이 붙는 경험주의의 출발점이 된다.

로크는 기존의 관념이나 선험적 절대적 진리를 부정하고 개개인의 감각을 통한 경험이 진리로 나아가는 유일한 문이라는 주장으로 최초의 근대적 정신을 가진 사상가라는 의의를 지닌다.

중세철학은 유한하고 불완전한 인간에게 신이 내려주는 절대적 진리, 신의 말씀이라는 보편성을 중시하는 것이었지만 로크는 기존의 진리라는 그 권위가 지적인것이든, 정치적인 것이든, 종교적인 것이든 상관없이 권위적 전통이나 사회적 관습에 따르기 보다 자신의 경험과 감각에 따라 사물이 실제로 존재하는 방식을 고찰할수 있어야 함을 주장하였다.

로크의 경험주의적 가치는 모든 인간은 백지상태로 태어나기 때문에 후천적 경험에 따라 인간성이나 인간지성이 어떤 누구라도 훌륭하게 발전할 수 있음을 존중하는 것이 되므로 평등주의적 자유주의적 사상의 기초가 된다.

그러나 한편으로 볼때 로크 본인이 지적한대로 ‘인간의 지식은 결코 그 자신의 경험을 넘어 나아갈수 없기 때문’에 자신의 경험을 통해 진리라고 확신하는 그 모든 것들은 자기안에서만의 진리일 뿐이라는 한계에 봉착하게 된다.

로크의 시각을 부정적으로 받아들이면 토론이나 지성의 발전은 무의미 한것이 될수 있다.

고정된 것은 없으며 각자의 감각기관의 경험에 따라 얼마든지 달라질수 있는 것이므로 보다 나은 길을 추구하는 토론에 있어서는 “반박시 니말이 맞다"는 식으로 오히려 논쟁이 무의미한채 소통이 막혀버릴 가능성이 있고,

지식을 진보 발전시켜나아가는 것도 무의미한 것이 될 수 있다. 어차피 다른 사람의 눈깔로 보면 달리 보이는 것이 되기 때문이다.

결국 인간의 감각기관으로 아무리 신중하게 관찰된 지식이라 할지라도 절대적인 확실성을 가지지 못한다.

개개인마다의 감각기관에 따라 각자 누적된 경험에 따라 사물을 판단하는 기준과 평가가 달라질 수 있기 때문에 어떠한 사물에 대한 판단은 완벽할수 없고 어느정도의 확실성이나 개연성만을 갖게 된다.

따라서 로크는 이러한 약점에 대한 해결책으로 감각기관에 따라 판별된 증거가 바뀌면 우리의 믿음(진리)까지 바꾸겠다는 각오를 할수 있어야 한다고 주장한다.

다시말해 내가 믿었던 지식이 어느날 다르게 보인다면 기존에 믿었던걸 버리고 달리보이는 그것을 새로 믿을수 있어야 한다는 것이다.

그러한 태도를 지녀야 내로남불이나 편견에 사로잡혀 잘못된 지식에 매몰되지 않고 잘못된 지식들을 수시로 고쳐나가는 과정을 통해야 내가 습득해가는 지식이 실체에 가까워질수 있다고 보았다.

그러나 이러한 로크의 보안책도 논란의 여지가 있을 수 있는 점이 내가 내 눈깔대로 뭔가 맞다고 주장했다가 아니면 말고 식의 줏대없이 무책임하게 주장을 번복하는 발빼기 전략으로 악용될 수 있기 때문이다.

더구나 인간은 자기가 평생에 걸쳐 옳다고 확신하고 굳어져온 고정관념들을 깨트리기가 쉽지 않다.

살아오면서 자신의 경험이 자신에게 이로운 결과를 가져다줬다면 그 관념은 고착화 된다.

대부분의 사람들은 이러한 것들을 삶의 진리로 확신하고 이러한 확신을 바꾸지 않는 것이 소신이라고 생각하기도 한다.

그래서 로크의 경험주의는 주의하지 않으면(항상 내자신이 경각심을 가지고 깨어있지 않으면) 뇌피셜사상으로 전개될 가능성이 크다.

그럼에도 불구하고 로크의 『인간오성론』의 가치는 서로에 대한 관용을 키워주는 사상이 될 수 있다는데 의의가 있다고 생각한다.

인간의 오성(이해력)은 종종 실수를 저지르기도 하기에 우리는 당연히 서로 무지와 실수가 있을 수 있음을 인정하고 너그럽고 공정하게 정보를 교환함으로써 각자의 무지를 없애려 애쓰것이 중요하다.

나와 생각이 다른 사람들이 나의 의견을 수용하지 않는다고 고집불통에 꼴통이라 곧바로 몰아붙이기 보다 상대를 꼴통처럼 여기는 내 마음이야말로 상대에게 나의 의견을 강요하려는 꼴통스런 고집에서 나타나는 마음이 아닌가 나를 돌이켜보는데 로크의 사상이 가치가 있다고 하겠다.
