우리는 과연 계몽의 시대에 살고 있을까?

칸트는 이것의 기준을 다른사람의 지도없이 스스로의 지성을 안전하게 또 잘 사용할 수 있느냐로 판별할 수 있다고 하였다.

만약 우리가 지식을 구할때 남이 판단한 것들을 좇아 그것에 의지하고 내 스스로의 힘으로는 판단해내지 못한다면, 그것은 왜 그러한 것인가?

칸트는 『계몽이란 무엇인가에 대한 답변』이란 논문에서 인간이 미성년 상태에 머무르고 있기 때문에 자기 스스로 판단하는 힘을 갖추지 못하는 것이라 말한다.

인간의 무지를 비추는 지식의 빛을 의미하는 계몽이란 훌륭한 사상가들이 밝혀준 내용을 떠먹는 식으로 지성인이 되는것을 의미하는 것이 아니다.

칸트가 말하는 계몽이란 인간이 자신의 미성년의 상태로부터 벗어나는 것으로서, 미성년의 상태란 자신의 지성을 다른이의 지도나 가르침 없이는 사용할 능력이 없는 상태를 말한다고 하였다.

미성년 상태로 머무는 원인은 자신의 지식의 부족함에 있는 것이 아니라 단지 게으름과 비겁함때문이며, 자기 스스로의 지성의 힘으로 지식을 다뤄보려는 결심의 부족과 용기의 부족으로 인한 것이라고 지적한다.

미성숙하게 있는것은 아주 편안하다. 나 대신 생각해주고, 나 대신 좋은길을 결정해준다. 나의 양심도 남이 선택해주며 옳고 그름의 판단도 남이 대신 해준다. 나는 손하나 까딱안해도 남들이 다 떠먹여주는것만 받아먹으면 되니 아주 편하다.

그러나 그것은 칸트의 표현대로 인간의 상태가 아닌 가축의 상태일 뿐이다. 그러한 가축들은 가짜 계몽을 퍼트리는 사람들의 도구로 이용당할 뿐이다. 가짜 계몽을 퍼트리는 사람들은 자신들의 가축들이 자기 스스로의 힘으로 걸어나가고자 할때 겁을 주며, 자기 스스로의 힘으로 판단하려는 것을 무모한 짓으로 여긴다.

그러나 자기 스스로의 힘으로 걸어나가고 판단하는 것은 처음 몇번만 넘어지고 실수하고 깨지고나면 결국에는 잘 걸을 줄 알게된다.

그렇게 처음에는 미숙하더라도 자신의 정신과 지성을 자기 힘으로 스스로 갈고 닦아감으로써 자신의 미성숙으로부터 풀려나는데 성공한 사람, 더 나아가 안전하게 나아가는데까지 성공하는 사람은 소수에 불가하다.

그러나 그 소수들은 결국 스스로 생각하라는 인간의 소명을 자기 주변에 퍼뜨리게 될 것이다.

계몽을 위해서는 자유 이외에 그 어떤 것도 요구되지 않는다.
자신의 이성을 공적으로 사용할 자유가 요구될 뿐이다.

사람들 앞에서서 자신의 생각을 용감하게 말하라.
그리하여 과감하게 현명해져라.
