인간은 선천적으로 악한 존재이고 자신의 생존과 이익만을 추구하기 때문에 그 결과 자연상태속의 인간은 만인의 만인에 대한 투쟁의 불안함 속에 존재하게 된다.

토마스 홉스의 『리바이어던』은 1651년 영국 왕당파와 의회파의 갈등이 극에 달해 서로를 죽이고 죽임을 당하던 분위기 속에서 씌여진 책이다. 홉스의 사상이 왕당파가 보기에는 의회파를 동조하는 것 같고, 의회파가 보기에는 왕당파를 옹호하는것 같고, 또 어떨때는 왕당파든 의회파든 다 무시하고 국민을 선동하는 사상같기도 하고, 국교회나 카톨릭회에게는 무신론자로 낙인찍혀 악마라 미움받고.

토마스 홉스의 사상이 너무나 급진적이어서 어느 집단이 보더라도 왠지 자신들에게 팩폭하는것 같은 말들을 너무 예리하게 정곡을 찌르면서 해대기 때문에 그 어느 누구에게도 완전한 보호를 받지 못한채 평생 암살 위협을 느끼며 주변사람들에게도 조롱받고 왕따처럼 살아갔다고 한다.

홉스에 대한 후대의 평가가 ‘독재의 옹호자’부터 ‘국민주권의 시대를 내다본 선각자’라는 극단의 평이 동시에 나온다는 것은 오히려 홉스의 사상이 그 어떤 특정 대상을 옹호하려고 쓰여진 책이 아님을 분명히 알게 해주는 부분이라고 본다. 읽고보면 옳은 말만 써놨는데 그 누구에게도 보호받지 못했고 그 모두에게 미움받았다는 사실은 한편으로 보면 홉스의 사상이 주체적인 소신발언 사상이라는 증거이다.

토마스 홉스가 절대왕권이나 독재정을 옹호하는 것처럼 보이는 오해를 풀어내자면, 홉스의 주장이 왕권이나 독재를 찬양한 용비어천가를 쓴것이 아니라 일종의 “리바이어던”(누구도 다 제압가능한 강력한 제3의 중재자)을 묘사하기 위해서 그 당시 가장 알기쉬운 예로 절대왕정을 비유한 “표현"으로 봐야 하는게 맞다고 본다.

완전한 자연상태 즉, 법이 국민을 지켜주지 않는 상태라면 인간 개개인은 자신의 생존을 담보받지 못하며 누가 나를 함부로 해치고 재산을 빼앗는다해도 자신의 생존을 지켜달라 호소할 곳이 없게 된다.

그렇기에 공동체가 그러한 야생의 투쟁상태에서 안전한 상태가 되기 위해서는 그 누구보다도 힘이 쎄서 누구든지 다 제압 가능한 절대적인 권위체(국가 Commonwealth, 라틴어로 Civitas 키위타스 라고 불리는 리바이어던)가 존재하여 그 누구도 타인을 함부로 위협하지 못하게 만들 수 있어야 한다는 것이다. 강력한 중재자인 리바이어던이 있어야 모든 국민이 안전하게 자유를 누릴 수 있다고 보았다.

홉스가 왕권만 옹호한 것처럼 인식되어 있지만, 실제 『리바이어던』의 내용을 보면 군주정뿐만 아니라 귀족정, 민주정 그 어느것이든 상관없이 모두 리바이어던이 될 수 있다고 보았다. 그 와중에 다른 세력과 권력다툼을 할 가능성이 적고, 권력이 뒤집어질 위험이 적으며, 권력자가 사리사욕으로 국민을 선동하거나 혼란스럽게 만들지 않을 가능성이 큰것이 그나마 군주정이라고 한것이다.

군주는 이미 존재 자체로 권위를 받고 태어난 존재이기때문에 다른 의회나 국민들이랑 권력싸움을 굳이 할 필요가 없고, 이미 모든걸 다 풍족하게 갖춰진 상태이므로 사리사욕을 탐하거나 권력쟁취를 위해 국민을 속이고 국가를 혼란하게 만들 이유가 없으므로 그 어떠한 리바이어던보다 가장 안전하고 공정한 리바이어던이 될 수 있다고 본것이다. 홉스는 일종의 “단일하게 유지할 수 있는 절대유일한 공정한 힘"이 필요함을 피력한 것일 뿐이다.

그러나 당시 사람들은 홉스가 리바이어던을 이해시키기 위해 비유를 든 말이나 단어 그 자체에만 걸고 넘어져 홉스가 말하고자 하는 “절대적인 제3의 공정한 중재자가 있어야 국민의 자유와 안전이 보장된다"는 진정 국민을 위하고 국가를 위하는 바른 생각을 알아봐주지 않았다. 그저 홉스가 하는 말 그 자체에만 속아 편가르기 하기위해 홉스를 악용하고 줏대없는 박쥐니 무신론자니 조롱하면서 홉스 사상을 따르는 사람들은 호비스트라 후려치기 하면서 홉스의 사상을 사람들이 가까이 하지 못하도록 하였다.

그도 그럴것이 홉스의 『리바이어던』을 보면 일반 사람들이 훌륭한 생각을 주체적으로 가질 수 있도록 계몽시키는 좋은 내용들이 많이 있기 때문에 탐욕스러운 위정자들이 보기에는 홉스의 사상이 자신의 지배체계를 위협할 불온서적으로 여겨질 수 밖에 없었을 것이다.

홉스는 그의 책에서 국가를 안정시킬 가장 적절한 리바이어던을 제시하기 전에 인간에 대한 이해를 키우고, 사고력을 키우는 방법이라든지, 논리적 생각을 갖추는법, 의사소통할때의 언어를 곡해없이 바르게 쓰는법, 진리를 탐구하는 법, 잘못된 지식에 속지 않는 법 등 사람들을 똑똑하게 만들어주는 계몽적인 내용들이 풍부해서 진짜 걸작 중의 걸작이라 할만큼 뿅가는 내용들이 많다.

뭔가 『리바이어던』을 잘 읽고 숙지하면 고퀄 지식인으로 거듭날 수 있을것 같은 그런 내용들이 풍부하게 있다. 그렇다고 어렵지도 않고 홉스 말대로 “가정을 이룰 이성을 지닌 정도라면 누구든지 이해하고 수긍할 만큼 쉽고 명쾌하다"라고 자신의 책을 소개하며 많은 사람들이 읽고 계몽되기를 바랬다.

홉스는 인간의 지혜는 책을 많이 읽기만 한다고 생겨나는 것이 아니라 인간의 마음을 탐구해야 얻어지는 것이라며, 위장과 기만과 허위와 오류의 학설들로 오염되고 혼탁해진 사람들 마음의 특성들은 오로지 마음을 탐구하는 자만이 분별해 낼 수 있다며 자신의 마음을 잘 성찰하고 인간을 바르게 잘 이해하는 사람이 될 것을 강조하였다.

홉스가 살아생전 자신이 쓴 단어에만 시비걸며 자신의 사상을 곡해하는 사람들에게 말하기를,

“어떤 저작을 해석하는 진정한 빛은 그 저작에 나오는 단어들이 아니라 저자의 의도이고, 주지하는 바를 생각하지 않은 채 일언 일구에 구애되는 자들은 아무것도 찾아내지 못한다. 이것은 진리를 추구하는 것이 아니라 자기 이익만을 쫓는 사람들이 상투적으로 쓰는 수법이기 때문이다.”

홉스의 『리바이어던』은 정치상식 수준으로 대충 지식적인것만 알고 묻힐 책이 아니다. 그속에는 인간을 어떻게 이해해하며 책을 어떻게 읽고 진짜 지식은 어떻게 판별해 내는지 주체적인 사유능력을 키워낼 힘을 길러주게 하는 책이다.
