제조업 주권의 중요성과 미래 인재의 방향성을 제시해 주는 책

경제성장의 신화를 이룩한 한국은 국가경쟁력에 대한 외부의 찬사는 커져가고 있지만, 실제 체감하는 경제는 점점 떨어져가는 느낌이다. 실제로 김영삼정부 이후로 한국의 잠재성장률은 점점 추락하고 있다.

선진 강대국들이 수백년을 견뎌내며 일궈온 것들을 대한민국은 반세기도 되기전에 따라잡았지만 점점 갈수록 뭔지모를 정체감이 느껴지고 총체적 난국에 빠져들어가는 기분이다.

이러한 문제의식에 대해 서울대 이정동 교수는 한국이 선진강대국을 벤치마킹 하며 경제성장을 하던 역량이 이제는 한계에 달했고, 지금의 정체감을 돌파해 도약시켜내기 위해서는 한국 스스로 “개념설계"의 설계도를 창조해내는 국가가 되어야 한다고 주장한다.

역사속에서 선진 강대국들이 세상의 리더가 되고 세계질서를 지배할 수 있었던 것은 정치 외교 경제 문화 등의 다양한 분야에서 수백년의 시행착오의 과정을 포기하지 않고 사람과 사람, 시대와 시대를 이어오며 무수한 시행착오에 비관하지 않고 실패를 누적시켜낸 축적의 힘으로 결국 세상을 지배할 자기들만의 설계도를 만들어 냈기 때문이다. 자신들에게 유리한 맞춤형 지성과 이념의 설계도를 짜놓고 다른국가로 하여금 그것을 따르고 싶게끔 만들었기 때문이다.

한국은 과연 사람과 사람으로 이어지고 세대와 세대를 이어오는 경험의 축적들을 쌓아가고 있는가?

세상을 선도하고 엄청난 부를 국가에게 가져다줄 개념설계도를 만드는 능력은 교과서에는 없다. 선진 강대국들을 벤치마킹한다고 해낼수 있는 일도 아니다. 교과서를 암기하고 답이 있는 문제를 잘 풀어낸다고 키워질 수 있는 능력이 아니라는 것이다.

이정동 교수는 한국이 현재의 총체적 난국을 뚫어내고 개념설계를 하는 진정한 선진국으로 도약하기 위해서는 “개념설계"를 할수 있는 인재를 키워내야 한다고 주장한다. 이것은 수없는 실패의 시행착오를 기록하고 누적시켜나가면서 성공해낼때까지 집요하게 물어뜯고 버텨내는 사람만이 해낼수 있는 능력이기 때문에 그러한 실패를 견뎌내는 인재가 많아져야 한다고 주장한다.

꾸준히 노력하는 사람의 실패는 정말 무서운 것이다. 남들보다 노력을 많이 하고, 매번 시행착오를 겪으면서도 남들의 무시와 비웃음을 받아도 그것을 개의치않아하고, 답이 안나오는 오랜기간의 불확실한 시간을 끝끝내 버텨내면서 실패의 교훈을 축적해낸 경험은 세상을 선도해낼 새로운 설계도를 만들어내는 능력으로 발현된다.

우리는 Made in China 제품의 허접함을 비웃고 무시하지만 그동안 중국은 수많은 선진국가들의 생산공장으로 작동하면서 다양한 기술력을 배우고 그것을 자체 개발하는 실패의 과정들을 거치고 있는 중이다. 세계는 중국 제품의 허접함을 비웃고 있지만 중국이 그 모든 것을 견뎌내고 실패의 경험들을 버텨내어 축적시켜낸다면 그들은 세상을 리드하는 새로운 설계도를 만들어내는 힘을 갖게 된다.

이러한 이유에서인지 각 국의 대기업들은 손해비용을 감수하고서라도 중국에서 생산공장을 빼가고 있는 실정이다.

생산현장에서 경험한 제조의 힘이 혁신의 바탕이 된다는 것을 뒤늦게 알아차렸기 때문이다. 생산비 절약으로 제조공장에 중국을 두고 있는 것은 지금 당장의 생산비 푼돈을 절약하고 기업과 국가의 백년대계를 무너뜨리는 일이 될 수도 있다. 공장을 내보내는 순간 혁신이 같이 따라간다. 공장에서 이루어지는 실패와 경험의 노하우들이 혁신과 설계능력의 근본이 되는 것이다. 중국은 내수시장이 크기 때문에 서구에서 수십 수백년에 걸쳐 누적시켜온 실패의 경험들을 짧은 시간안에 축적시켜낼수 있다.

중국제품의 빈번한 고장이나 기술발전 실패로 인한 사고가 무수히 발생되고 있지만 그 시행착오를 견디고 성공할 때까지 끈질기게 분석해 나가면서 만약 개념설계를 해내는 단계에 도달하게 된다면 중국의 그 정치적 독재성까지 겹쳐져 전세계는 중국이 짜놓은 판으로 굴러야 되는 노예가 될지도 모른다.

우리는 실패를 한번도 하지 않는 사람을 두려워할 것이 아니라 실패를 수백번 수천번을 해도 절대 포기하지 않고 그 실패를 통해 경험을 축적하고 꾸준히 기록해나가면서 오랜시간을 자신의 목적을 위해 끈질기게 버텨내는 사람을 가장 두려워해야 한다.

그 사람은 아무도 해내지 못한 새로운 길, 자신에게 꼭 맞는 새로운 것들로 창조해낼 잠재력을 키워내는 사람이며 세계의 패러다임을 바꾸어 낼 수 있는 사람이다.

우리 교육이나 산업환경이 실패를 두려워하고 질책하는 문화가 아닌 실패를 묵묵히 지켜봐줄수 있는 관용의 힘을 키워내야하며 실패에서 무엇을 얻고 어떤 방향으로 나아가야 하는지 자신만의 정답을 찾아가는 사람에게는 칭찬하고 격려해주는 교육문화 기업문화가 조성되어야 한다.

남의 실패를 비웃고 무시하는 문화, 짧은 시간내에 원샷 원킬로 성공시켜내는 것을 대단하게 생각하는 문화라면 사람들은 자신의 인생과 이세상을 위해 “반드시 해야 하는 일"에 노력하고 투신하는 것이 아니라 “대충 욕안먹고 백퍼 성공할만한 것"에만 적당히 도전하여 타협하는 겁쟁이들만 양산하게 될 것이다.

결국 새로운 길을 창조해내려는 인재보다는 남들이 다 가는 길로만 따라가는 후진 인재들만 늘어날 것이고 칭찬받기에 급급한 겉만 번지르르한 위장된 가짜 성공만 늘어날 뿐이다. 그렇게 국가는 점점 도태되어 갈 것이다.

빠른시간안에 성공했느냐 실패했느냐를 따지는 것이 중요한 것이 아니라 자신이 목표한 바를 성공시킬때까지 집요하게 물고 놔주지 않는 “미친력"같은게 절실한 시점이다.

혁신과 창조의 길은 빠른길이 없다. 그것은 모두 시행착오의 축적을 견딘 결과이다. 잘 나가는 사람, 선진국을 벤치마킹하는 시대는 끝났다. 수년 수십년의 실패를 버텨내고 그 힘으로 성공시켜내는 힘을 키워낼수 있어야 한다.

개념설계능력은 ‘눈에 보이지 않는 그 뭔가의 본질을 꿰뚫어 새로운 체계를 창조해내는일’이기 때문에 벤치마킹할 교과서가 있는 것이 아니고 정답이 있는것도 아니다. 이러한 설계를 해낼 수 있는 인재란 답이 있는 문제를 빠르고 정확하게 잘푸는 사람이 아니라 무수한 시행착오의 과정에서 실패의 비참함을 무던히 견뎌내고 주변의 칭찬이나 비난에 개의치않고 자신의 길을 스케일업 해나가면서 묵묵히 걸어가는 우직한 사람이다.

이러한 인간상은 비단 특별히 선택받은 인재들만 노력해야 하는 속성이 아니라 거국적으로 온 국민이 일상적으로 자기 인생의 혁신을 위해서 갖춰야할 속성이다. 이것은 거창하게 국가적 인재가 되기 위함이 아니라 사적으로 자기 공부나 자기 직업, 사랑하는 사람을 선택하고 행복한 가정을 꾸리는데도 큰힘으로 작용하는 속성인 것이다.

완벽한 상대를 만나기를 꿈꾸기 보다는 사랑의 스케일업을 가능케하는 버텨내는 힘으로 아무나 만나도 서로에게 잘 맞춰져 찰떡궁합으로 만들 줄 아는 것이 사랑하는 능력의 핵심임을 알 수 있어야 한다. 사랑의 스케일업에 의미를 두지 않으면 첫눈에 반하는 사람이나 자극을 주는 사람에게만 끌리게 되고 조금만 마음에 안들면 쉽게쉽게 갈아치우게 된다. 자신은 나쁜X 들한테 상처받았다고 생각하겠지만 근원적으로 스케일업을 해내지 못하는 인내의 힘이 부재한 탓에 긴 시간을 통해야 진가가 드러나는 좋은 사람들을 알아보지 못하는 것이다.

공부, 직업, 연애, 결혼 이 모든 것의 시행착오와 실패를 거듭하더라도 스케일업을 위해 버텨낼 수 있으려면 결국 “자기자신만의 과녁"을 찾아내야 하는 문제로 회귀된다.

외부의 평가에 흔들리지 않고 묵묵히 자신의 길을 걸어갈 수 있으려면 “나는 누구인가"에 대한 정체성에 대한 고민이 밑바탕이 되어야 한다.

하늘에 떠있는 별은 갑자기 생겨난 것들이 아니다. 이미 수억광년전부터 빛을 낸 과거가 이제야 빛을 발하는 것이다.

나는 어떠한 빛을 이 세상에 펼쳐 보여주고 싶은가?

이러한 자신에 대한 정체성이 확고해야 계속되는 실패로 남들이 전부 안된다 생각하고 포기하고 나가떨어질때 오히려 “동력이 떨어져가는 순간 자신의 것을 떨쳐내면서까지 스스로 반동의 힘을 발생시켜 더욱 파워풀한 추진력을 터트리는 로켓처럼” 자신의 실패를 성장의 동력으로 응축시켜 더 높이 도약해버릴 줄 아는 힘이 나오는 것이다.
