그 유명한 적자생존의 원리(survival of the fittest).

찰스다윈을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 이 적자생존의 원리에 대해 정확히 개념을 잡고 시작해야 한다. 사실 적자생존의 원리는 찰스다윈이 아닌 허버트 스펜서가 그의 저서 <생물학 원리>에서 처음 사용했다.

허버트 스펜서는 일종의 약육강식, 강자만이 살아남는다는 의미로 사용한 것인데, 찰스다윈이 말하는 적자생존은 스펜서의 시각과 달리 약육강식의 의미가 아닌 “주어진 환경에 가장 잘 맞춰진 적응자"의 의미로 보아야 찰스다윈의 사상을 오해없이 이해할 수 있다.

아니, 환경에 잘 적응하려면 강해야 살아남는거 아닌가?
단순하게 생각하면 생명체가 더 진보되고 더 강한쪽으로 진화 발전해야만 살아남는것처럼 생각되지만 다윈이 연구한 것에서는 생명체 중에는 그 어떤 생명체보다 오래 살아남아 있지만 여전히 하등한 상태로 전혀 개량되지 않은채 방치되어 존속 유지되어 있는 생명체도 많다며 적자생존을 반드시 강자여야만 살아남는것으로 보지 않았다.

아무리 그 주변의 어떤 종보다 월등하고 강한 종이 등장한다고 해도 생명체란 아무리 잘나봤자 결국 자연의 지배하에 벗어날수 없기 때문에 환경에 적응하지 못한 강자는 금방 사라진다. 자연에서 살아남기 위해 하등한 상태로 있는것이 유리하다면 차라리 자신을 퇴화시키기도 한다. 팔,다리,눈,귀가 없는것이 생존에 더 유리하다면 기꺼이 자신의 기관들을 없애는 쪽으로 퇴화시킬수도 있다고 보았다.

물론 일반적인 상황에서는 환경에 잘 적응하고 살아남는 적자가 되기 위해서는 일단 주변의 어떠한 생명체보다 진화발전해야 된다고 말하고 있으며, 남보다 앞서는 그 차이를 일으키는 것은 엄청 대단한것이 아니라 아주 미세한 차이, 지극히 작은것으로 시작된다고 말한다. 처음에는 간신히 인정할 수 있을정도의 차이만 나던것이 오랜 시간을 견디어 내면서 그 차이가 조금씩 갭이 생겨나고 주변과의 경쟁에서 하나씩 이겨나가면서 다른 생물에게 지배당하고 있던 장소를 뒤집어 차지함으로써 종의 경쟁에서 승리하게 된다고 말한다.

그렇기때문에 다른 종과의 경쟁에서 승리를 하려면 일반적으로는 일단 개체수가 많아야 하는데, 개체수가 많아야 하는 이유는 개체수가 많으면 다양성을 확보할 수 있기때문에 외부에서 별 희한한 놈이 싸움 걸어와도 그에 대적할 수 있는 개체가 존재할 가능성이 크므로 다양성이 담보된 개체수가 종의 경쟁에서 살아남을 필수조건으로 보았다.

우리가 이 시점에서 교훈을 얻을 수 있는것은 자연이라는것은 강하고 잘난놈을 선택하는게 아니라 자연에 잘 적응하는 놈을 선택한다는 사실이다. 자연이라는 속성은 항상 고정된것이 없는 어디로 흘러갈지 아무도 알수 없고 예측할 수 없는 변화무쌍한 것이기 때문에 어떤 고정된 특성이 진리로 유지되는 법이 없다. 누가 어떤 분야에서 강자가 될지는 아무도 모른다는 것이다. 그렇기에 자연에서 생존하기 위해서는 그만큼 어떤 자연에도 적응할 놈이 단 하나라도 나올 수 있도록 다양성을 확보하는게 최선일 뿐 무조건 어떤 성질이 정답이라고 단정지을수가 없다.

생물학을 연구한 많은 학자들 중에서 유독 찰스 다윈이 가장 유명한 생물학자 되고 <종의 기원>이 고전으로 찬사받는 이유는 <종의기원>에 담겨진 사상이 인류가 타인들과 공존함에 있어 평등한 관점에서 보다 더 상호 공생적인 마음으로 서로 존중하며 살아가게 만들어 주었기 때문이라고 생각한다.

허버트 스펜서의 약육강식의 적자생존의 논리는 무조건 강한자가 우월한것이라 말하고 있기 때문에 스펜서의 사상을 받아들이게 되면 강자는 무조건 옳고 우월한 존재임으로 약자에게 함부로 해도 된다는 논리가 파생되게 되고 사회적 약자는 열등한것이므로 없애야 된다는 생명경시의 사고관이 나타나게 된다.

그러나 찰스 다윈의 사상은 적자란 자연이라는 환경에 잘 적응해낸 종이므로 그것이 설령 열등한 형태로 보인다 하더라도 생존에 적응하기 위한 도태는 옳은 것이 된다는 배경에서 생명체 간의 우열을 따지지 않는 사고관이 전개된다. 또한 자연은 고정된것이 아닌 변화무쌍하기에 어떤 생명체가 지배종이 될런지는 아무도 장담할 수 없다. 다양한 개성의 생명 하나하나가 인류생존에 모두 다 필요할수 밖에 없는 소중한 존재가 되므로 누가 언제 어디서 어떻게 인류생존에 유리한 성질이 될런지 아무도 모르기에 생명체 모두를 소중하게 동등하게 존중하게 된다는 사고가 펼쳐질 수 있게 된다.

찰스다윈은 인간은 개인적 이익을 위해 살아가지만 자연은 생물 전체의 이익을 위해서 조정해 나간다고 말한다.
찰스다윈이 다양한 종의 연구를 통해서 알아낸 자연선택의 특징이란, 전체를 바라보지 못하고 자기자신만 생존하려는 이기적인 생명체는 자연선택에서 반드시 버림받는다는것 동시에 자기자신의 이익을 생각하지 못한채 무조건적인 이타성만 가진 존재 또한 자연선택에서 반드시 버림받는다는 사실이다.

그말인즉슨, 자연의 선택을 받아 종의 경쟁에서 살아남으려면 나혼자만 잘먹고 잘 살려고 하지도 말고 너무 다른사람들만 위하면서 나를 죽이고 잃어버리지도 말고 나의 생존과 더불어 전체의 생존에 동시에 유리한 것이 무엇인가를 잘 성찰하여 그것을 잘 개발해서 나도 잘살고 타인도 잘살게끔 할 수 있게 하는것. 그것이 찰스다윈이 말한 적자생존의 법칙이다. 그리고 그것을 위한 나만의 특질을 찾아냈다면 내가 할일은 그저 묵묵히 열심히 내길 가는것, 아주 미세하게나 하루하루 조금씩 나아지게 만드는것. 그리고 그것이 축적될 시간의 누적을 견뎌내는것. 그것의 종의 경쟁에서 적자가 되는 방법이다.

국가적인 측면에서 볼때 찰스다윈의 사상을 적용하자면
국민이 평등하게 서로 존중받는 세상이 되기 위하여 국가가 할 일은 국민을 평등하게 만들어준답시고 모두 다 똑같은 크기로 재단하여 남들과 다른것이 될 수 없게 만드는것이 아니라 오히려 남들과 다르게 각자의 자유껏 마음대로 다양한 개성을 존중하는것이다.

남들과 다 똑같은 평등이라면 꼭 그 사람이 아니더라도 대체 가능한 사람이 많기 때문에 한사람 한사람 소중하게 생각하지 않게 된다. 그 사람없어도 얼마든지 대체가능한 사람이 많기 때문이다.

그러나 국민 한사람 한사람마다 너무나 다르고 다양해서 제각각의 개성을 발휘하게 한다면 국민 개개인이 모두가 대체불가능한 희소가치 온리원이 되기 때문에 적재적소에 어느 누구하나 필요하지 않은 사람이 없게되고 그리하여 그 모두를 존중하고 소중하게 여기지 않을수 없게 된다. 평등한 세상은 이렇게 만드는것이지 남들과 똑같이 평준화 시킨다고 평등한 세상이 오는게 아니다. 오히려 남과 똑같이 만들어버린 평준화는 흔해빠진 사람들만 양산시켜 서로를 귀하게 여기지 않고 서로를 무시하는 세상이 될 뿐이다.
