연구방법론에는 크게 연역법과 귀납법이 있는데, 철학서들을 읽다보면 기본적으로 연역법을 쓰거나 귀납법을 써서 자신의 주장을 피력한다.
연역법을 쓰는 학자는 그 책 하나로 문제와 답, 원인과 결과가 명쾌하게 제시되어서 한권의 책으로 모든것이 타당하고 수긍되게 만든다.
기존에 다른 학자가 주장하는 내용을 반박하여 자신의 연구내용이 참임을 증명하는 식이다. 책 하나만으로 반박의 여지가 없다고 할 정도가 되어야 길이남을 명작인 고전이 된다.
귀납법을 쓰는 학자가 그 저작의 내용이 명작으로 불리기 위해서는 자기 스스로 발품팔아 엄청난 양의 정보를 직접 경험하고 기록하며 넘사벽의 방대함으로 때려박아야 한다.
그래서 그런 책들은 연구기간이 길고 다양한 국가들의 역사를 자기가 몸소 경험하고 냉철하게 판단해서 기록한 것을 활용한다.
남의 시각으로 쓴 책은 부연적으로 참고만 할 뿐이고, 직접 발로 뛰어서 경험하고 선동에 물들지 않은 팩트만 정확하게 기록되어야 시대를 초월한 예리한 저작이 된다.
실증적으로 자기가 몸소 직접 보고 느낀것으로 방대하게 때려박지 않고, 남이 연구한 역사서나 저작들만 주로 참고하면 아무리 잘써봤자 순간 반짝 유행할 뇌피셜이 되던가 오류가 많은 편파적 저작이 될 뿐이다.
개인적으로는 연역식 저작들의 논리성을 즐기는 편인데, 귀납법의 연구방식도 엄청나게 훌륭한 저작이 될 수 있구나하고 귀납연구에 대해 신뢰감을 주었던 학자가 알렉시스 토크빌이다.
처음 토크빌의 저작들을 읽고 그 시대를 초월한 예리함에 내가 느낀 충격과 소름이 아직도 잊혀지지 않는다. 그래서 사람들이 토크빌~ 토크빌~ 하는구나 싶었다.
몽테스키외의 <법의 정신>또한 그러한 귀납식으로 실증적인 연구가 녹아든 책인데, 그가 이 저작을 위해 40년간 혼신의 힘을 다해 <법의정신>을 썼고, 출간한 뒤 심신이 탈탈털려 그 이후로 <법의 정신> 공격글에 재반박하는 글 외에는 다른 어떠한 저작활동도 더이상 할 수 없었다고 한것을 보면, 저 정도는 되어야 시대를 초월한 명작으로 남는구나 싶었다.
그리고 이러한 귀납식 연구 저작들은 그 이후 연구자들에게 인용자료로 쓰일수 있게 유용한 혜택을 주는 고마운 저작들이 된다.
그래서 책임감있게 자기눈으로 직접 확인한 선동되지 않은 팩트만을 써야 하는것이다.

분명 옳다는 이론대로 정책을 만들었는데 정작 세상은 엉뚱하게 돌아가는 이론과 현실과의 괴리가 그 때문에 나타나게 되는 것이다.
토론할때도 이러한 것을 참고 할 수 있는데, 연역식 토론은 상대의 말의 오류를 지적하여 그것을 반박(주로 똑같은 전제를 적용하더라도 다른 결과나 나올수 있음을 지적하여 상대가 절대적으로 옳다고 주장하는 것이 절대적이 아닌것임을 지적하는 방식)을 하는데, 연역식 토론은 예리한 판단력이 있어야 하고 순발력과 재치가 습관화 되어 있어야 한다.
귀납식 토론은 순발력과 재치가 없더라도 노력으로 가능한데, 주제에 대한 방대한 자료들을 조사해서 그것을 미리 공부하고 가면 상대가 불확실한 정보로 사실을 왜곡시킬때 정확한 팩트로 정정하는식으로 토론의 승기를 잡을 수 있다.
이러한 귀납식 토론을 잘하려면 평상시에 신문이나 역사서 등을 즐겨읽는 습관화가 되어 있어야 한다.
